Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but if I remember correctly 60 Hz was chosen because it was a multiple of 10 of the 60 seconds per minute, 60 minutes per hour timekeeping standard. The idea was that all power generation would adhere to this standard, and make interconnecting power generation systems easier on the engineering types.
