The Condor Returns...
I hope I'm not going to be banned for this, but here goes...
Personally, as a hacker, I find it disrespectful to say such things about Mitnick. Kevin IS a legend, regardless of what the media will have you believe. What exactly is it that you think he stole? Have you no interest at all in the sophisticated attack that got him in prison in the first place? IP spoofing is, I think, one of the most fascinating attacks ever conceived.
If you guys are ashamed of what you are, I might not want to be a part of AO. Sorry.
Hey there, chaps! Being mexican-american, I don\'t really think I have the racial background to say that...Oh well, visit our site at www.evilcorp.tk
Don\'t expect any content...for a few weeks!

aeallison , while i was young at the time, yes however i remember using a REAL BBS for downloading games and other programs I wanted to get my hands on. But not everyone back then knew how to do those things, and in addition when mitnick commited his last few acts there were already major ISPs up and running, so the internet was well on its way to the top.
SpydaByte, Well I really think it was Shimimora and John Markoff who really used the publicity of this whole 'mitnick' thing more then mitnick himself. He didnt want the movie being made, he didnt want the book written, he had no part in that. The last bit of 'publicity' Mitnick had was when he wanted to sell his 2 laptops confiscated by the FBI(the ones he used for hacking) on eBay so that he can get enough money to fight against the FCC in court over the issue he had with his radio license.

I am not ashamed of who I am, I helped develop the internet protocols that we use today, I could have probably showed Mitnick a few things...and I might have...hrm
<edit> BTW you were very adept at 2 which is when I built the finest BBS in Missouri, Sorry Mitnick got caught...I didn't</edit>
I have a question; are you the bug, or the windshield?

Dome:
You're right. He wasn't the main one that wanted all the publicity, but he is wanting some. for example why is he going to The Screensavers to have his first "Sign on"? He had to have some kind of agreement for that. He is not wanting ALL the publicity, but some of it he is accepting. I am definately not saying he is not a Legend, just because of the media, but I believe the media has made his "public" persona.

First off you are not getting banned for this. If there are people on AO that ban people for their opinions, then they should ban me. I am not ashemed in what I am, in fact Bill Gates was a so called "Hacker" while he was my age. (Don't quote me, i lost the source) .You are also right, ip spoofing is a fascinating attack.
Mitnick stole software from Motorola, Sun Microsystems, Novell.
Read the short article here .
Read another here .
Please stay with AO, even if we don't turn out to be your dream online friends, but I am definately not ashamed for being a Hacker.

There is another thread like this one on AO, check it out here . enjoy :-)

Hey everybody, i have nothing to say about if kevin mitnik was a "hacker" or not and say anything about what the term hacker means but i know for a fact that he is still using computers because someone i know who does network security just took a seminar in las vegas where kevin mitnik was there giving a speech on security. There were also other hackers such as se7en and 2 other hackers who told more on hacking from the hackers point of view.

AFAIK, Kevin wasn't exactly a huh.. saint? martyr? (script kiddies usually worship him). But I believe he was quite tallented himself, and was made a myth by media. About all money that was lost/stolen/whatever, I can't say if its all the truth. It's quite interesting that when a say, virus spreads, in 5 minutes someone says that 12.5231 millions will be spent to repair virus damage. I wonder if its black magic.. .
Well, eventhough he wasn't eactly innocent, being held in prison for 4 years without trial, and being accused of every possible attack wasn't really fair to him. . The propaganda around him easily surpasses his deeds. He deserved punishment for what he did, but not to be made a media icon. Something, I 'suppose ' (suppose= I am sure) he didn't ask for.
