Advice: Whenever you get a smart failure, even if your disk doe snot seem to be bad, backup your important stuff!
Out of curiosity what was the brand of the hdd?
The difficult thing with those big disks is that some recovery progs do not support them.
Drive rescue was free, but that one does not support NTFS and had many bugs? Now there's Filrecovery 3.0 for Windows. http://www.lc-tech.com/download.htm
Stellar disk data recovery, you can test it to see if it can see your data, you have to pay for a recover.

Restorer NTFS restores from NTFS.
I didn't came across a fully functional free one with NTFS support.
