Security on SAT is pretty good. Most of that stuff is C-Band or L-Band, though some are in the K, X, or even Ka bands ( http://history.acusd.edu/gen/recording/spectrum.html ). Other than the L-Band, it would require a pricey and hard to find microwave receiver. Not impossible but in the difficult category, and a little too expensive for your average WAR-*-er.

On top of that is the DSP (Digital signal processor) needed to break out the bits, an understanding of the encoding protocol to make sense out of it, Polorization of the radio signal, directivity of a dish transmitting antenna to overcome, and finally the multiplexing technique used on the RF transmission.

Takes special equipment, training, money and a will to overcome all of these things. Not the same as your average guy runnung net stumbler from his laptop while riding the METRO through downtown DC.

And that is if the signal is not encrypted which is possible.

Hope this helps
