cool as long as I don’t intend on stealing any data and don’t break into a computer worth more than 2,500 buchs its only a petty misdaminor ...
This will depend on the jurisdiction where it occurred, where it originated, etc. ( most laws I’ve seen can prosecute in either location: extradition comes to mind here. )
... what are the chances of me wanting to break into such a lousey sytem and even more so what are the chances that the owner of such a cheap set up would be paying somone with the skill to trace my actions.
Depends, who, what, where, when, why?
They may not be paying anyone. Maybe they are a charity and someone got doubted into doing it for free. Or it is a system administered by someone who is paranoid ( sound familiar to anyone ? ) Or maybe it is a government honeypot.
In any event, this brings to mind a movie I just saw: a thief says he made $100,000 on a job that he spent 20 minutes performing. Without going into prep time, someone asked him how much time he spent in jail. Five years was the answer. Lets see, 40 hours a week ( 2080 hrs. a year ) , overtime after that ( 6680hrs. ) for five years .... how much did he make an hour? Not counting holidays for double time, etc., but counting time and a half for additional hours ( 6680 hrs. a year ) he made about $0.438 per hour, had no time off, no freedom, and does not take into account legal fees, fines, etc. Not to mention future job opportunities. ( Oh, there is always the lecture and book tours! )
Again, this would depend on where the offense was prosecuted and the laws that applied.
I think I would rather count nails at Home Depot!
