It is true that big-name distros are significantly simplifying the installation process with good hardware detection and substantial package repositories that do make it much more accessible for users to manage their system. Sure, when something's wrong, harder to fix for the average user than in Windows [maybe] but there's enough people that don't know what's going on with their computer as it is.
