I cannot give you an explanation. I am afraid that accounts/profiles do get corrupted for whatever reason, and there is not much that you can do, other than that which I suggested.

I do suspect the shutdown process though ("saving your settings") if you had a power supply abnormality at this time it could corrupt your data. Similarly, just pulling the plug?
