Graphics Card
hi people
I have a confusion to be taken care of. I m on my way to buy a good graphics card for my machine. But, even after reading reviews and researching on stuff, i wasnt able to reach anywhere.
I already have GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 with 64 Mb memory on my PC. But, now I would like to have better graphics card....which has the pixel shader thing and a memory of minimum 256 MB or above. I have the Compaq Presario 4020IL machine with the AMD Athlon 2000+(1.67GHz) processor.
I live in India, have budget of around Rs. 10000($222).
Whatelse would you need to know abt my machine??
Another thing, I would like to ask is.....what's the difference between Graphics card and Graphics Accelerator? are they different names of the same thing? Whats more preferable to buy for a gaming pc.
Also, are only the nVIDIA graphics card good? or there are more better ones out there?
Thnx

Well we use the Geforce cards alot...have no real problems
Nvidea chipset......
have had too many problems with the ATI drivers myself
you will need to know what slots you have available in your machine for your card...agp, pci or pci express????

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...31118&lang=en&
Here you can do some reading about your machine...find manuals or contact support.
Some basic searching on google
AGP
PCI
PCI Express...should give you all the info you need
such as this....on PCI express
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

If you have a GeForce 2 currently, you most certainly don't have PCI Express. If you look inside your case, see if the port your video card is in is different from the other ports you have (the ones for like modems and such). If it is different, you have AGP, if it is the same, you have PCI.

Hi there, codenamevirus ,
You need to look at the motherboard slot that your current video card is in............if it is white and there are several others similar, you have a PCI card.
If it is much shorter and a dark brown colour, it is AGP.
AGP should run at 66MHz and PCI at 33MHz.....................
