Port question

Hello all,
I am a networking noob (moron, actually) and am not sure if this is something I should worry about or not. I just set up a Smoothwall Express firewall and later ran a Shields Up scan at grc. com It showed all ports as stealth except one, port 113, which it showed as closed. Shields Up gave my system a "failed" score based on that one port showing as closed. My question is, is this anything I need to worry about and, if so, how might I fix it?

Port 113 = IDENT used to be used by mail servers and is still used by IRC servers.

If you aren't running a mail or IRC server - no worries (mostly)

If you want to close it use the the smoothwall web interface (I think it's called external interface) is where you want to shut it off.

EDIT: Smoothwall is what opened the thing in the first place

Those online scans are a joke.

A closed port is NOT a security risk.

"Stealthing" ports does NOT increase security.

Security through obscurity is not security.

Uhm, i dont think that smoothwall has 113 open by default. How is smoothwall connected to the internet? Are you behind a modem/router? If so, then the grc scan will pick up the modem/router instead of smoothwall, resulting in the modem/router having port 113 open. I just finished setting up a smoothwall for a client 3 days ago, and there were NO open ports on the RED interface by default.

Thanks everyone for the info. Sounds like it's really nothing to worry about. I'm so new to networking stuff beyond the basic that I'm not always sure what's good or bad.

I suspect instronics is heading down the right road when he suggests the modem might be the culprit. I have my Smoothwall red interface attached to my cable modem, so that might be the issue. Either way, sounds like it's not a huge deal anyway. So much to learn.........

Thanks everyone!!!

Starting to think you're both right. I know I can't listen to Security Now because he really gets on my nerves quickly.

Thanks to all for the advice and suggestions.

Yes, sadly. After doing some searching with the google I have found all kinds of unflattering stories about him. I now know not to take him seriously. KP
