Just had fire on a friends PC
friend told his pc couldn't start
I checked the power supply -> no power
I placed the thing back in the pc cause the friend wanted to go to the shop where the pc came from to repair the thing.
the friend insisted to try it one more time:

If it was just the transformer then it probably wont bother anything. As long as it didn't send a power surge through the cable to the motherboard then probably didn't hurt it. Just replace it and see what happens.

Hmmm, flames and smoke? Is that from the MB or the PS?
Doesn't sound like a short from the wall because:
A: it would fry the power supply
B: it might trip the breaker on that power segment.
Solution:
Buy a new power supply. Go ahead and buy a 300 watt PS because you'll need it for an upgrade. That is, if it's an ATX PS and not an AT PS. Reason for this is because if you had a fire, then it would be power related through a short of some sort.
If you get a new PS and it still doesn't work, chances are it's going to be motherboard-related and hopefully his warranty will cover it (if it's a new PC) else he's buying a new motherboard.
Pray it stopped at the motherboard level and didn't get any of the cards.
It was the PS that gave flames (It was an ATX PS 235Watt)
The friend is going to the shop (I hope for a 300Watt ATX PS), I will post up the result when he's back.

not too much seems to be written on power supplys. but i know a cheap one can f*k up your computer faster than anything else.
can any one tell me who makes a good, for sale at store type, power supply?
Last time I had a fire, it didn't mess with anything but the power supply. It was going for about a minute also, because no one knew what to do, and I wasn't in the room at the time.
Anyway, it can be ok with just a ps replacement, but you won't actually know until you try it....unless there is melted plactic or something.
Your system board and processor might not have survived the fire. The hard drive, cdroms, floppy, might be alright if not damaged by the fire itself. I have seen the fire before from the system board being plugged in backwords.
How did you plug in a System Board connector backwards?
There is some little plastic thing that forces you to put it right.

Dont worry even I am not that dumb, however when I was in my first peripherals class one student was so stupid they couldnt figure out why one plug had to go on the left, the other on the right. Anyway a small fire was the result. It was an old 386, but fire is never fun.Quote:
