The new 200 gig h/d has arrived!

You guys remember that post where people discussed those new wd hard drives, with up to 200 gigs of storage space? Well, it looks like they are out. If you visit, http://www.westerndigital.com you will see Drivezilla is big eye catching letters, underneath it calls the new 200gig hard drive a monster drive. Sounds pretty good, though I wonder how fast the new drive will be, I mean 200gigs can't go all that fast. Because when looking at the specs, the RPM is 7200, same as 120gigs, and the cache is only 2 megs, whereas you can get a 120gig hard drive with an 8 meg cache. The av. read/seek time is still the same, 8.9 seconds, the interface is ultra ata/100, still, I don't know how fast it would be. If anybody knows more about these new drives, plz write about it.

No OSs that home users use would support it... but then again, who needs a 200Gig Hard Drive

ac1d: You could put ya cd-rom pr0n collection on it... all of that _might_ fit onto a 200 gigger, and that'd let you have room for that networking softare I'm finding for ya. ;)

hell.. I don't NEED a 200gig drive.. but I'd still like to have a rack of 'em.

I need 200gigs, download all kinds of crap I do. My porn collection might fit, but I doubt it, I'll have to keep those on DVD or something. I want these 200 gig drives soooooo bad but nobody in my town has them yet, I'm going to look for them online instead. Besides, I want to install multiple OSs, XP Pro, Redhat, and Mandrake. 200gigs should fit them all nicely, I was going to use 120gig, but if I can have 200, then I have to have 200.

Actually, there is supposed to be a patch in WinXP SP1 that will allow it to function in XP, and this new interface can handle a 144 petabyte drive (Va Va Voooom)...all others will have to use the supplied controller card and drivers supplied with each drive. i doubt that anyone will need 200gig...unless you go to LAN parties alot

I beg to differ on the "no need for 200 gigs" mentality, people. With the ever expanding size of the OS (specifically WinXP) footprint, the advancements in video technology and ever more complex feature laden games and applications along with the proliferation of broadband technologies, we're going to need all the space we can get. Every Admin I have spoken with thinks that this is wonderful news. Lets face it...you can never have too much HD space. I will agree with Khakisrule concerning the specs on this monster...10k or 15k rpm and an 8 meg cache would make it a lot easier to get excited about, but hey, they have to start somewhere, and this is definitely a beginning.

Honestly, I have a bunch of systems with large drives, but I wouldn't spend the money on these new WD drives. They only have 2 MB cache (while their special edition drives, which go up to 120 GB have 8 MB), which'll slow them down some.

Also, in response to Khackisrule, the drives aren't out yet, and you'll probably have to wait a few months before you can get them at a decent price. Honestly, 120 should be more than enough for you. Though, if you need more, I'd recommend two 120 GB SE drives on individual IDE channels... you'll have much faster access times with two drives then you would with one drive.

Personally, I'm going to wait with buying any larger drives until the serial-ata interface comes out. I want the space, but I need the speed more than I need the space.
