Modem trouble

I always have to reinstall my modem driver whenever
I need to surf the net, otherwise it wont connect
to my ISP. It was working fine win98se. Now my OS
is win2000.

Modem type: Generic SoftK56 Data,Fax,Voice,Speakerphone PCI Modem

When I let windows search for a suitable
the driver w2000 selects driver for it, I have tried using that driver to,
but that doesnt even make my modem dial.When I use the driver
which I got with the modem, windows gives me a message saying
digital signature not found and that there is no guarantee that
this software works correctly with windows. But the driver works
fine and I am able to log on the net till I shutdown my windows.
Once I start my windows again after shutdown, I have to reinstall
my driver if I need to log on the net again...

I just can figure out whats wrong. Help me out guys.

If you still have the drivers that came with your modem then you also should have the support information. Visit the modem manufacturer's support site and download the latest drivers for this modem., Or you could try http://www.driverguide.com username=drivers pass=all

very strange indeed....I had the same trouble in XP before I went to DSL. I solved mine by disabling the serial ports on my machine (wasn't using them anyway) but my modem was ISA, which is not supported by XP (or 2000, I think) but did work properly after I took the afore mentioned action. But along those lines, you may have a device conflict somewhere that is causing this...give your device manager a very thorough going over as the conflict may not show up as being related to the modem itself. Strange things happen in Windows....thats a fact of life.

I guess you have an external modem (right?), microsoft support has an article
which says the modem must be switched on while win2k is booting otherwise
it will not be accessible. Apparently this is by design......

I think your machine has it's unique interpreter, you better store the installer elsewhere so that everytime you log on the internet , the OS will just search and detect or autodetect the driver stored, and just like Krang says, you better switched on the modem before booting, so that the OS will autodetect.

I use Generic before but i switch to US robotics (3Com0.....
