kernel hacking?

I been using linux for 3 weeks, but i still dont know what "kernel hacking" is,I know what a kernel is though

I am new to linux as well but i think they mean programming.

Trying to reprogram your kernal to act the way you want it to.

I dont think that they mean hacking as in breaking into someone elses computer. :)
