Yes its true, the original bboard thread that gave birth to the much loved smiley has been discovered on a back-up tape from September 16, 1982 at CMU CS. after years of obscurity, the smiley can now be preserved for posterity in all its original glory,

First time I saw a smiley was back in 1990, on one of those dial-in BBS. There was this contest about who could make the funniest smiley. There were lots of suggestions, and I remember one of them:
