NIDS - a project

hello ppl,
I'm a AO newbie and I'm interested in doin a small project on network intrusion and detection system jst to get a betta understanding of the subject. Wanna complete this project within 2/3 months...was wondering where to start. Did read a few papers and da documentation put up abt snort...would like to implement sumthing along those lines...watever is possible in 2 months ;-) . The subject is really vast and if any of you could help me with da problem statement or help me with a few links ,it wud b gr8...
