Yes Jon Johansen goes on trial tomorrow in Norway because he wrote the DeCSS decoder when he was 15. Personel opinion is I dont mind prosecutions but I hate to see people made an example of with retroactive laws.

Instead of going after this kid they should go after who ever came up with the crappy copy-protection scheme. Guess its easier to blame the creator of the program then the thousands of people who use it.
How old was he when he was arrested? 15? If so, would not due process become involved if he was made to wait this long for a trial?
maybe this is the same story but it reminds me of a story about some company practically telling the hacking world to try to hack into there systems and actually allowed hackers to try their best. but when someone finally got through their system, they procecuted him/her/them.

Personally I think that if they arrest this guy then they should arrest the guy who made the VCR. I remember when I was like 5 years old there were peaple walking door to door selling slighly "used" tapes.... free *cough movies *cough. It is legal to copy movies and shows to tapes or rent movies and share them with your friends before you need to bring them back to the store yet now that peaple are losing money peaple finally give a crap about piracy?

I'm pleased at this outcome. Hopefully it's smacked all of the mentioned groups up, and made them realise they can't prosecute with a view to making an even larger profit.

This is the second case (first was the adobe thing) showing that for the law makeing a tool that COULD be used for evil is not a capital offence..
Just as well.. else smith and wesson would have a hard time...

its the same with insurance companies. acts of god. if your boat gets struck by lightning and blows up, to stop them having to pay out money, they just say its an act of god. now i for one dont beleive in any religion at all.
and you wanna know the latest liability, terrorism. we got a letter today from house insurace company, if our house is damaged by acts of terrorism then we arent covered. now, that sounds fair enough, but if our neigbour came over and diliberately smashed a window. by all rights, the insurace company can say, that was terrorism.
its all a load of crap. like i say, weather its acts of god with insurance companies, or video tape pirateing, it all comes down to money.
