Some bloke and he didn't even reformat the HDD so I'm getting errors and ALL the help files are missing. How do I see what's been deleted? Can I do it VIA dos?

A little more info please...What os?, and do you have a DOS boot disk?
It has Win 95 on it and just the DOS that comes with Windows.
Can't you get it to make you a dos boot floppy? Really sounds to me like you need to reformat and start over from scratch.
sounds to me like you should re-format the lot. if its second hand and its comming up with errors i dont thinks its the hassle trying to replace lost files. just format it and start with what you want
reformat indeed. press f8 or whatever to access the boot menu if you can, and boot into the command prompt. and give it the old format c | y or whatever. otherwise you would really want to have a boot disk.
Get into the BIOS, change the boot order to boot from cdrom first. Then insert a Linux or BSD bootable disk and load that on there. :D
