I don't think Sadaam could care less about internet access. Is this a weapon for a modern war? I could live without the internet if US geeks think they need to deface my website.
The use Military is starting to use the Internet to communicate position to all units on the field to avoid friendly fire causalities. I've seen some great info on this on Discover and TLC also read some interesting articles in either Sci America or MIT Tech Review (the articles tell you what is being done without telling you how). I do not think Iraq's military is doing that but the website could be used to disseminate other information. No doubt should shot be fireed both side will attack each others web presecense.

Reports and evaluations be as they may, i have a difficult time believing any dictator with a deep bank account (such as S.H.) would have all his IT eggs in one basket. Besides, he runs a tight organization, there is no discussion, and he has already given his field commanders their marching orders depending on the tide of battle. "Communication" is already in place for military orders. Not that i think they will be perfect (or even reasonably effective perhaps) but they will not depend on the "internet" for his military to function.... unless it is to disseminate misinformation perhaps.

The internet grew out of military research, the DARP net, then the ARP net, finally the internet. It is an excellent tool for communicating. After the 9-11 disaster only the internet was reliable. Military use of and attacks on the internet are to be expected.
Yes, Mayhem991, you are correct in all you say. However, let's take this one step deeper: The Salon article on the original post quotes someone who is supposed to be S.H.'s main IT guru, spilling his guts to everything including what he gets paid. Now, just think for a minute; if you were the main IT dude for a dictator, would you even be *talking* to some reporter, let alone telling them what you made? You are correct that the 'Net has countless valuable military uses, (for everyone, btw!) and was originally funded with our military bucks. One of the military uses is "disinformation". Now, i'm not saying the Iraqi's IT-Guru's interview was totally misinformation, however i am fairly certain that if he went shooting off his big mouth to some foreign reporter without following the script from his boss, he'd have a *much* shorter haircut than when he started talking.Quote:

If you have more than one ISP, run a tracert through each one to a common target: When i dial in with one ISP, and target a domain just 100 miles away, the hops go clear across the USA three times, coast-to-coast, before they stop at the target. When i dial in with the other ISP, the hops go down to CA, up to CO, then over to the target. It seems to depend on what their (ISP's) upstream providers program, and what sweetheart deals the CEO's of each phone company have with the others. It seems to me that if i had the dough to buy the billion$ of $ in luxury vehicles from Germany, i'd sure have enough chump-change to provide an alternate 'Net route for my internet connectivity besides going somewhere in the USA and Great Britain...... or am i just being suspicious? :D

I think they would have way more fun SMS bombing their cell phones and e-mail bombing any/all accounts known to ISPs in Iraq.

I was watching the news a few days back and they had this guy port scaning and he was explaining different types of attacks the goverment may or may not use. Then later I also heard that the .gov is doing SMS/mail bombing and droping bags of post cards over iraq. Im not saying that we should go over there and have the most violent war as possable... but personally I feel a bit embarrassed knowing that my counties idea of 'cyber-warefair' is basicly doing kiddie stuff like spaming with SMS/mail bombers and stuff.... I thought they said the whole info-war thing would be full of intrusions and DoSing yet the only thing they've managed to do is spam the peaple of iraq and take out some guy's e-mail address or pager/phone.
When they said 'cyber-warfair' I though they were going to like start defaceing or get the govermental IT together and make some cool trojans or something. But instead I turned on the news a few weeks back all they are doing is giving everyone in the goverment spaming tools. Yes thats right.... the goverment has paid peaple to setup 'tools' for the rest of the "cyber-warriors" who are to stupid or to lazy to make their own programs.
