I am tring to install Red Hat linux version9.0 and I have a couple questions.
1. do i need to make the hard drive /dev/hda1 instead of a vfat to a swap to install RH? Or leave it the same.
Every time i try to make a new one it always says couldnt locate partitioning request.
2. Do i need a HD that is totally empty to install Red Hat.
My OS: Win ME
Not sure what to do.
I tried making a fdisk but you can't unless your HD is totally empty.

If you aren't very versed in linux partitioning it might be a good idea for you to let the install process autopartition your drive. This way you can be sure that you aren't doing anything to screw up your install. If you feel like you just have to do the partitioning manually, this is how it should look:
hda1 = /boot
hda2 = /usr
hda3 = /home
hda4 = Extended partition containing:
hda5 = /
hda6 = /var
hda7 = Swap Drive
Or something to that effect at least. Hope that helps : )
I have a dual-boot Windows ME/RedHat 7.2. Everything worked fine for me. Although I have my linux on a seperate 15gig drive with ME on a 20gig I am sure that you can have both on one drive. I know that you have to give linux at least 1 totally empty partition. I gave it 3, A /boot, swap, and the main / drive. The problem may be that you have to have an empty partition.
