netscape7 java & red hat 9

Ok, I need a little help here.

I've been trying to get this sucker to work for about a week now and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

I downloaded and installed the newest JRE release of Java from Sun.
I then downloaded and installed the latest version of netscape 7.
I used the rpms and they both were sucessful.

According to everyone I've asked so far... thats all there should be to it.
But apparently its not....

I can't find any decent documentation to save my life either.
(I've googled, dogpiled, yahoo'd, crawled, begged and pleaded)

I can't view any java on a website.

Anyone know how to get netscape to recognize it as a plugin????
Am I doing something wrong? :confused:

I've even tried switching the install order....
Netscape then java.

Oh, if you need system specs... I'm using this as a server.
PIII 700mhz, 384mb ram, POS video card, 2 3com 3c509x, 20gig master 60 gig slave... bla bla bla

Do I possibly need to use the SDK version? I thought that was for development?

the java plugin for netscape is currently available as part of the JRE v1.3.0. After installing the JRE, add the location of the java plugin to the NPX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable, then restart netscape.
For csh/tcsh users:

setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH $HOME/.netscape/plugins:/usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/plugin/i386:/usr/lib/netscape/plugins

or for sh/bash users:

export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=$HOME/.netscape/plugins:/usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/plugin/i386:/usr/lib/netscape/plugins

I never got your method to work... and I know other people having the same problem and I figured I'd post the resolution...
Make sure you are root when doing this and after the install... make sure you have permissions to it.

Download and install netscape 7.02 (or later if there is a newer one out by then) http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

Install the latest j2re (mine was j2re1.4.1) http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html
I used the rpm.

download the rpm, and extract it from the .bin file
./j2re*.bin
agree to the terms and it will extract the rpm file
Install the rpm...
rpm -ivh j2re*.rpm

let that install and then close out netscape if it was open.
open netscape.
click on help / plugins.

if you see java there you are good to go... if not

browse to your netscape install folder
mine was /usr/local/netscape
then goto the plugin folder
/usr/local/netscape/plugins

create a symbolic link to the java plugin
for me it was
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_02/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

be sure to replace the /usr/java/j2rexxxx to your version
open netscape up again, check help/plugins
it should now be there
if it is... test it
