That's the Microsoft Remote Procedure Call Service. I'm not really familiar with it, but if you want to learn more, google is always ready.

http://www.cexx.org/rpcss.htm
rpcss - rpcss.exe - Process Information
Process File: rpcss or rpcss.exe
Process Name: RPC Portmapper
Description: The Windows RPC portmapper process handles RPC-calls (Remote Procedure Calls) and maps them to the appropriate service provider
Common Errors: N/A
System Process: Yes
It's a regular windows file but this doesn't mean it cannot be infected!!
Run a decent virusscanner just to make sure!
I agree with SirDice, just ran a check on symantec's website for viruses/backdoors that include rpcss and this is what I found:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r.egghead.html
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...w32.hezhi.html
You might want to also read up on the list of vulnerabilities associated with rpcss from symantec or another related site.
Some more RPCSS Info Here
(its located about midway through the list)
here, I found a really good explination
www.cexx.org/rpc.htm
as SirDice and GreekGoddess suggested, I would scan it too.
