IT managers are always looking for motivated people to start in entry level positions.
OK Mate, just my opinion......
I would suggest that you search the Net for the AV sites and subscribe to their bulletin board/e-mail notifications.
You need to know at least one of networking and a modern client/server operating system (remember that potential employers have networks!)
Do some searching for antivirus, anti trojan, anti spyware, anti bot products and note what the do (or at least claim to). Create a little spreadsheet/database, and decide what you really need them to do?
Get yourself a "lab" or "sacrificial goat" machine................usually a cheap ex-corporate bit of kit (I know you are watching Undertaker :)....so I won't use the "b" word! ) You will need this for experimentation. Without putting your real/shared/networked system at risk.
I know there are members who will give you a lot of good advice on books and such...........just a few extra ideas perhaps.
I wish you luck in your quest
thanks for the info. Its just that I have been administering Windows/*nix systems for the last five years and I really want to get into that field. It looks so interesting. I mean I used security tools to fool around with, but I guess I need to study some more. ANybody here know of any company that hires entry level specialists right off the bat?
There isn't a defacto company out there who puts up a, "welcome n00bs" flag. You'll have to hit the streets and sell yourself to potential employers just like anyone else. The problem you have is that you are trying to get into a very desirable area of the IT industry when the world economy is in the crapper. We have gotten over 400 applications for an internship that pays zippo. These folks hope to get a "foot in the door" so that they have a better chance of getting hired on should a position become available during the internship.
Anyway, I'm not trying to discourage you, but instead, give you a pulse for what is happening right now.

:p
You could try one of the temp to hire companies like Volt or Cotelligent. There are many in all the major cities.
Mr lucifer,
I remain by my original suggestions.........you have now told us that you have an admin track record that is noteable?..........I would interview you, but I would want to know what you had to offer above the other 20 candidates...............that is where the research into scumware and threats pays off?
just my £0.02 worth
good luck
thanks guys for all the info
