Depends on the OS that your ISP runs. I know from our Win2000 ISA manager (which controls our various proxies), we know everything people have visited, what times, port connections, limited packet information, and last of all, the IP address....okay take a breath.
Just using a dial up connection alone, they already know what modem you've connected to, as it depends on their setup, but they have name designations for every modem node you connect to. They really don't need a proxy to tell them much though, if they really wanted to know they could put in some grease hours and find out things using other methods.
if they could.why are they using the proxy?Quote:

is it the cheapst way?

WE S all & hear All :P we t god in the Wires......
Proxies just make it easier to manage..Goes with the theory, "why work harder when you don't have to?" Same thing with a proxy, it gives you a means of gathering info that otherwise might not be readily available. Also helps keep web traffic from taking up a lot of bandwidth, as it can be used to cache sites that are frequently visited, thus keeping traffic off the lines.
Many advantages with ISP's that provide proxies to their users!
disc0rd.so helpfull and thanx 4 ur time.
No problem :)
Hey Camel,
Just wondering if u're talking about a university proxy/firewall or the KACST-ISU webcache/proxy. In the case of the former, most universities, or at least mine, does keep a thorough record of each and every Internet access. However, I dunno, if ISU would be putting in resources for logging online activity - it would be a HUGE amount of information, we're talking about the access records for the entire Kingdom.. [well, except ARAMCO.. :P ].
