learning security (new to linux)

i havent installed mandrake yet but im downloading it right now. i had it before, and i just wanted to know whats a good tutorial or wheres a good place to start learning different ways of hacking with linux! :D

Mainly its peaple who need attention, to join some kinda scene, or they feel a need to label themselves something. When you really think about it... words like hack and hacker have everything to do with looking cool or smart & crap like that yet clearly now days it has nothing to do with siting back and enjoying your computer. :rolleyes:

I kinda pity peaple who do things just so they can label themselves as something. I wonder how many kids would join a croud of self proclaimed hackers, fallow each other in a straight line, jump off of a bridge, & then die. No wait a minute... we are about the same age? Damn... from your recent questions I thought you'd be alot younger than me.

Zexter, Its open source, alot of its software is open source, there is so much **** to fix & tweak with, and *nix is basicly made up by hundreds if not thousands of computer enthusiast, hobbyist, & hippies. Bleh..... thus it all helped coin linux "as the hacker's OS."

n01100110, give good advise here. Learn the commands then you can make your own scripts for *nix. If your to impatient or just lazy I'll suggest reading a book called Learning RedHat Linux. It had just about everything ya need... the CD was filled with alot of stuff & the book was great. After about a day or two of reading it I could not only install it, write my own shell scripts, but I also avoided alot of wasted time & pit falls. And if you wanna do something less than legal I'd suggest atleast geting used to the enviroment before you plan on anything.

Yes , Steve is absolutely on the right path with this.. It's an excellent book , I just finished reading it a couple weeks ago and it was great.. Also UNIX in a nutshell is an Excellent reference...But other than that I agree with The|Specialist when he said that little kids just need a label on HACKING and destroying other peoples systems , the word 'HACK' nowadays is basically used by kids under 12 or kids that just infected their neighbor with sub7 or like these kids next to me in my cisco class who are trying to crack the NT admin password , and they have no clue what a SAM file or a hash is but oh well.. It really is sad../me shrugs

maximum security linux is a good book. It goes over the techniques that have been used in the past acceterated it also gives really good tips on installing it securly. You should check it out. It Deffinitly worth the money. Also read textfiles on the internet about security. Also if your really serious set up a lab in your home. You know with a old computer. put linux on it and use another computer to practice breaking into. Using diffrent techniques. Its fun and you learn

Let's give the guy the benefit of doubt and assume he meant 'hack' in the proper, 'old' sense of the word...
