Microsoft or Linux System Administrator Certification. Do a Google search for "system administrator certification" (in quotation marks) and READ.
Like allenb1983 says, there's a lot of information out listed on Google on this topic.
There are 2 areas that are important for system administrators: skills and qualities. Skills are pretty self explanitory but qualities are the things good system administrators possess as part of their "being".
I'll give you some insight into the qualities people look for in system administrators (in order of importance IMO)...
* Logical thinking
* Analytical: good at analyzing something
* Problem solver: good at problem solving
* Quick learner: must be able to pick new things up quickly
* Adaptable/flexible: can adapt to any situation
* Engineering mentality
* Communication: many sys admins are not too good at communicating...if you are it will help you stand out of the pack
This was just off the top of my head thoughts on this, do some research on career sites that offer info about sys admin jobs. I would also read the job postings to see what they are looking for.
Good luck.
Hi pwnage,
In my experience employers are either looking for individuals with a degree (C.S., E.E., C.I.S.) or an individual with
certifications in the products and tools they use. Personally I like to hire folks with a B.S. or M.S. in either C.S. or E.E.,
and then we send them through courses and seminars to get vendor certified during their first year or so with the
company and then every couple of years after that.
For myself, and the companies that I have worked with, I would say that a B.S. in a computer-related field will get you
in the door much easier and with a higher salary than would a fist full of certifications. Every company has a different
hiring philosophy however, and you should do what you think is right for your situation.

Not certain why that link doesn't work, but it's a good reference.
Just trying to get jm459's URL to post without getting truncated....
