Allright well I am starting to get a little annoyed with my mouse. For some reason every time I double-left click a shortcut link to a program on my desktop. Instead of opening the program it will instead show me the "context menu". Now I have checked the Mouse properties in the Control Panel. The button configuration is set to "Right-handed"

As follows:
Left Button -- [ Normal Select & Normal Drag ]
Right Button -- [ Context Menu - Special Drag ]

As you can see my mouse is not doing what it's suppose to be doing. Even more strange the left-button on the button refuses to work at all.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can remedy this problem. Any suggestions would be great ... Is there any registry tweak that I can apply ??

Not so sure about registry tweaks but i have had the problem a couple of times. It used to happen to me when you play a game like minesweeper or a number of other applications. It stopped everytime once I right clicked on the desktop and then left clicked on whatever else. That might have just been me though. Im sure someone else can help you out better. But one more question have you tried another mouse yet?

My first (ok, second) question would be how old is the mouse? If the left button isn't working at all and the mouse is more than 12 months old - just buy a new mouse, cos it sounds to me like some of the wires on the inside are knackered... they aren't that expensive (unless it's a specialised mouse)

Couple of things you might try:

1. Go into <control panel> delete the mouse and reboot. Let windows redetect it.

2. Try reinstalling the drivers

Oh, and clean the rollers & testicle before you reboot. :)

If that doesn't work and the mouse is old, just get a new one, they don't live very long, just like their namesakes.

You may want to try a normal reboot instead of deleting the mouse and rebooting first if you haven't already done so. This has happened to me a few times in the past and rebooting worked. If that doesn't work then try what nihil said.

Actually I did try the normal reboot but that just seems to make the problem worse. Instead of fixing the problem the mouse will just completely refuse to work at all. Then when I reboot it again only one button will work. It goes like a circle : reboot=dont work, reboot=left button works,but not the right button,reboot=right button works,but not the left one ...
I think that I will just buy a new one since this mouse is from 1998 ... kinda old dont you think ?
But even worse is the computer that I use to access the internet [ Since I don't want my new one to be inhabited by viruses ] ... I got this info from::

New mice are like 5 euros. You can try taking your apart and checking for loose solder connections, dirt, etc. Mice are generally pretty easy to dis and re assemble. And if you break it, well, you can hopefully afford a new one.

i t am having problems with my mouse. it seems to jump around the screen. i have checked the owners manual but that doesn't help. i got so desperate i called tech support, and everybody knows the h.p support sucks. they had me completely resore my computer and i lost all my files and programs. after all that the problem still persists. please , will someone help me.

what kind of mouse is it.. optical or a normal one with a little rubber ball inside it? If it's one with a rubber ball inside it... have you tried cleaning the ball and the rollers on the inside at all? If not try that first ... second look at the cabling to see if its damaged at all, third if it's a PS/2 connection look at the pins on the connector... they should all be straight but if any are bent that might also be causing problems.
