i was planning on upgrading to the 64 bit amd athlon sometime in the near future and was curious, if any flavors of linux would be supporting this (ie. red hat 9, slack 9, suse ect) or have they come out with special versions for 64 bit machines?

Several versions of Linux already support 64bit CPUs, or are currently working on it. Don't worry about losing that capability when you switch.
The latest Linux Journal has a LOT of information on that topic.
Yes quite a few offer 64 bit solutions. One off the top of my head is GENTOO if you choose to go for them (good choice) let me know how long it takes to compile a system b/c it took close to a day on my XP 2500 and i would like to see if it is any faster.
Shouldn't all the distros support it since it is built right into the kernel? Check out the following link to learn about linux support for the amd athlon 64.

Not all apps support 64 bit yet, though.

All partners have a 64 bit kernel I believe. I have the Suse one.

Building an AMD 64-bit Linux system
it might pay to check out the Silicon Graphics website (www.sgi.com), they have numerous systems that run linux ( all their stuff is now 64 bit), you may be able to find out what distro(s) run on their machines and you may get an idea of what may run on your A-64
