Ping?

Hi all, I want to know what is the purpose of PING? How to use it? What I can do with PING?

It sends out an ICMP Echo request (ICMP Type 8) to a destination IP address. The Host will recieve the packet (and assuming it isn't dropping ICMP) send back an ICMP Echo reply (ICMP Type 0). It is a way to test lag, network connectivity and other such things.

I don't know if I should laugh or scream in frustration. 112 post and a Jr.Member, yet you some how have never figured out how to use the search function that 'AO' provides. Thats not even mentioning Google as yet.

Under a Google search for ping: Results 1 - 10 of about 7,150,000. (although good luck getting to what is helpful)

The main thing you would use "ping" for is troubleshooting. You have to establish if a connection is working? use ping. If you are not networking, the most common use is troubleshooting a modem in a stand alone PC.

You must remember to select a connection that you KNOW will respond, if the target machine's firewall is in stealth mode, you will get a "false negative" ...........this is when you sell the customer a new modem,............and a few weeks later sell his old one to someone else :rolleyes:

Older internet perverts such as myself use "ping" to grope good looking female computers on the net. But be careful you may get your face slapped, or a port scan in reply :D
