OnStar
Is anyone familiar with the OnStar service? I am thinking of purchasing a GM vehicle with OnStar but I am not sure how secure the service is.
Is there a way or have there been any incidents where someone tapped into the system? I know the OnStar service provides remote door unlock via a signal. Can that signal be intercepted? I know that most computer-based systems are not totally secure but am just wondering how secure they are. I don't want to have this service if it's going to be an easy way for someone to break and enter. I know it would be less attractive to steal a car with the OnStar service since it is tracked but what about if you have useful stuff in there?
Shoot your ideas my way, the more the better. Thanks

As far as the stuff I have read, it is pretty secure. I do know that there is always someone that can get into just about any system. But as far a car security I can pop someones locks in about 10 sec with a coat hanger so I wouldn't worry about people breaking in via Onstar plus Onstar would be all over the thief and who knows it may change a boring saturday afternoon into an adventurous one!
(Sorry for bad grammer writing quickly need to get to class)

As far as someone hacking into OnStar, haven't heard much along those lines. The main concern is about privacy and whether law enforment can effectively track your every move/call/etc. using OnStar.
In any case, enjoy your new ride, whatever you decide to purchase!

Might want to take a look at this thread where the privacy issue was discussed.

Thanks MsMittens. I did a search but didn't stumble upon this thread.
Thanks guys for all the feedback. I think am going to stay away from OnStar for now. The big picture is a little scarier than I thought.
