Imitating a Network
When I plug into my schools network with an NIC that it hasn't seen before, before I can do anything, it checks to see if I have the blaster patch installed. From here, if I don't have it, I go no further. If I do have it, I enter a login screen. I login my campus username and pass, and from there I have access to the internet.
I would like to imitate this setup. I plan on having a wireless network, and I figure I can add another level of security by having that password that I can hand out. I think it would put a step between someone who cracks WEP and spoofs MAC. The current school setup only requires a password once for each NIC, but I would like a password for each logon/bootup. The password screen is handled by a web page (which I would have fun making).
Is this software related, a custom script, or what? I don't know what this is called, otherwise i'd google for it.
Thanks a bunch

Have you thought about asking the school? I'd imagine that probing for the system's version would indicate patch level or a specific port that's patched would respond differently.

Yeah, and they sent me an FAQ. Typical help desk.

So keep bugging them. Find out who the main manager is. Find out who's in charge. Be persistent and politely annoying. Tell them you don't want the source code but are interested in understanding how it works because you want to build a similar tool for wireless (maybe they'd be interested in talking to you about it).

When you get the information and when you build the tool could you write a tute about it? I will wait....
