Unable to sign in on aim. when attempting i get error window that display "category 4, code 1". anyone have any idea why

Uninstall it and re-install it in a different location. Make sure your firewall if you have one, allows it to connect to the internet.

Already did that twice. How would I find out if firewall allows it?

well disable your firewall and then try again. Reinstall AIM in a new directory, for example on your desktop.
