I'd like to try Linux, but I'm baffled by the huge amount of distributions.
Can someone recommend a free Linux distro with a GUI, for desktop use.

djhuk,
There are some marvelous threads in AO written on selecting a Linux Distro. Just go to either the search engine on the main page or go to the OS section on the forums.
cheers
did try the search, but i'll try again :)
edit: the related topics turned up some stuff
djhuk,
Well I know there's a bunch in there, because I have personally responded to many. :D
But anyway, if you are new to Linux, I would recommend either SuSE or Mandrake, can be downloaded for free but I would recommend buying the CD though.
good luck.

Be sure to thank gore
Here is how I like to choose my new distro.
I open up my web browser and point it to http://linuxiso.org/
I then get a straw tear up some tiny pieces of paper.
I put the tiny peices of paper in my mouth to make spit balls... then let em fly out the straw.
Whichever distro has the most spitballs by the time I'm done... thats my new distro!
Then I go to the site and read the docs. In the end... they're all *pretty much* the same.
Except for which distro has which type of install or which distro comes with which packages.
If you don't like any of the ones out there right now... make your own.
Lots of people do that... thats why there are so many distros.
Or.. you can just look at Gore's thread... :D
