A little warning
Ok just bought new PC - finally one that will run WIN XP without chocking to death on the spec needed :)
So I set it up installed XP pro and then went looking for my security disks - couldn't find them...not a big deal i use AVG/Outpost so i can just download them - but going online without a firewall??? hmm dodgy
but my way of looking at it was 'well only going to be on for 2 mins'
it only took 20secs >_<;
now I have just spent the past 3hrs cleaning the shite out of my system (glad i remmbered the whole shutdown -a thing or would have to had done a clean format install)
think am almost done now
so just a little warning to people who think that they dont really need security....that no one would attack thwem a simple home user.......well I'm a simple home user - and it only took them 20secs

Hi Val,
I had the exact same problem a few months ago after upgrading a box to xp. I was wise to the fact that blaster was still on the loose, so i installed Nav befor attempting an update. However although blaster hit within one minute of going on line, Nav was unable to deal with it. As it was a fresh install and the def's were not upto date.
So i have come to the conclusion that it is more important to install a firewall first, as this would have blocked blaster.
Live and learn hay.

why didn't you turn on the XP firewall? local area connection>advanced>"protect my computer and network from the internet"

God I love my Linksys Router with NAT Firewall build-in! ;)

With blaster, what you can do is immediately open a command prompt (after you get the official "this is going to shut down in 1 minute" screen) and type 'shutdown -g 9999'. Not sure on the exact format but I believe the -g is the grace period. It cancels the other one out and you can patch.

Val,
I am relying upon you to stop me being burned at the stake as a heretic :D
I download the free Zone Alarm onto a CD and load it onto the target machine..............it is enough to protect you against the ususl exploits, until you download/install the fixes.
I have done this dozens of times, and no failures YET!
You don't need clever crap................just set ZA to maximum, and away you go?
20 minutes is about what I would expect for an infection on an unprotected system......from feedback from mates in the game.............
So..............use the free ZoneAlarm, then bin it?
You KNOW it makes sense
Cheers

Hrmm, gotta agree. I know that XP's built in firewall isn't much to boast about, why not use it until you can "settle in" so to speak with your new system? Ahh, anyways it's a lesson learned I guess ;). By the way, you never mentioned the attack or spec's of it. What exactly happened? Do you know how the person attacked you, etc?

just usual worms didn't note down names soz :(
just got outpost downloaded along with AVG - did full updates of AVG scanned and let it get rid of what it found. Then did full online scan as well to ensure all clean and it was :)

Really? Wow.. that IS a lesson learned. You caught a worm that fast? LOL you should be a fisherman or something. 20 second's has to be a record (hell, even 2 minute's has to be a record). Congrats! ;)
