Nmap reboots system
Hi all,
i have used nmap 1.3.1 (win32 with GUI) and faced no problems but i tried to used nmap 3.55 (win32) but when i type the command nmap -sS -O XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX my system eventually reboots . What could be the problem and what might be its solution.
Thanks

This is a bug in the new release. I have seen this now on about 3 different boxes. I have reported it to Fyodor and currently there is no fix other than rolling back to build 3.50.

thehorse13: thanks for the information.

Yeah. I had a reboot too. Thought it was a fluke. Seeing this made me download the 3.50 version.
I couldn't find a link to older versions on the site though.
If anyone wants to download 3.50 here is the link:

Note: This is the Windows version! AFAIK the *nix version doesn't have this bug.

Actually, it happens on the W32 platform as well as *nix. My Fedora Core 2 box dumps hosts on their heads when using 3.55.

Hmm. I may need to re-test my fbsd version :( I didn't notice anything though.
No reboots, core dumps and/or panics yet

UPDATE:
I spent some time with this today (sniffing traffic, checking logs, testing software, etc.). Turns out that the issue is caused by a bug in Microsoft's SMS client. As you would expect, I sent in the bug report to MS and they have confirmed that it is a problem from an earlier build of SMS client that has carried forward. NMAP triggers the bug and causes a reboot.
This solves the mystery of the reboots, and of course, caused me to eat my shoe when I alerted Fyodor that NMAP wasn't the cause, but in fact, Microsoft is to blame.

Microsoft pulls ahead once again :D

TH: What about the *nix version? Did I understand correctly when you said that version also crashed/rebooted/dumped core?
Note: AFAIK I don't have the SMS client. But it still reboots my machine
