Hi, new here, so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I recently started using this firewall/anti-virus/spam filter/registry guard. I went about 8 pages back on this particular forum section and couldn't find any info on it so I was wondering what people think of it. Is it good? Are there any major vulnurabilities? Etc. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

First of all....
Welcome to AntiOnline (on behalf of the more senior members)! I'd recommend investing some time in finding out how AntiOnline works. Read FAQ's, stickies, etc, etc..
I'm not sure that this is the correct forum for your post. I thought Bit Defender was predominatly Anti-Virus software. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I have had a look at Bit Defender on the net, and can see it has evolved into a security suite, much like Nihil explains further down. So, it would seem your post is in the right place. Personally, I can't comment much on Bit Defender. I will add that in this arena most software is competent, it's all in the configuration features / ease of use.
Hope you get some opinions that help. Sorry I can't be of much help.

You may well get more success browsing the Anti-Virus Forum. You will almost certainly get something from using the search facility.

lemme also be of some help , try to search it out in the "search box" as per my knowledge you will find all the topics on almost all security issues (dats y AO is a gr8 place ,any thing and every thing related to security )
also try to dig out the old topics in "security archives" can be found in "discussion board" a lot of the questions have been answered there

Yes I can see he suggested using the search like I did in my post, but surely that just adds enphasis to my post - hardly a reason to neg!
Additional helpful information, although not specific, is also mentioned by yourdeadin, i.e. the use of the secuirty archives and where to find them. Well almost, in discussion forums - from the home page. I worked it out and I'm simple! lol

The Interent is full of companies and folks that will provide you with their apprasial of which antivirus is the best and they'll even post a list of how theirs (of course on top of the list), is the best. When I look for a decent AV opinion I try to check independant reviews and the opinions of those that are actually on the front lines.
It took a while to find a review that wasn't motivated by money and sells. At least a face value, this one seems to meet that goal. So how did BitDefender stacks up against a few others? Unfortunately I didn't have the time to check very many sources for any exploits on your AV. But one of the most important features of all the AV's, is the ability to update the critter to stay on top of the new viruses that are thrown at us.

Please do not worry about where your post is, if it is badly out of place a moderator will move it for you (I, personally, think that it is fine where it is). I understand your confusion as you have purchased one of the new generation "security suites" and our forums reflect the individual elements of this multipurpose product. ;)
I am not familiar with this particular version, but I have encountered BitDefender before, and have no complaints at all about the company or its products (so far). I put the brackets reservation in because in security software a company is only as good as its latest product, and the next one might not be as good.
OK, what you have bought is:
1. A firewall
2. An Anti-Virus
3. A spam filter
4. A registry guard
Your problem is that you now have to think of setting all these up via one interface, so it can be slightly confusing. I will give you a bit of old timer's advice:
1. Read the manual (download from their site if needed)
2. Check for a user's forum on their site (best place to ask questions is from fellow users)
3. Check the default settings.................they are not always the best for you
4. Set everything to "on" and "maximum" then ease off slowly.
A few (brief) examples:
1. The firewall must monitor outgoing traffic, as well as block incoming. You should be asked to set permissions for outgoing connections.
2. Set the antivirus to do real time scanning, all files, heuristic scanning ON, scan e-mail, and updates on (unless you really trust yourself to remember)
3. I am not sure how that Spam filter works, but if there are keywords, go for stuff like "viagra, penis, enlarge, loan, etc........."
4. If you have a mail protector, set it not to allow executables to be run from WITHIN your e-mail.
5. I hope that there is something similar for innstant messaging/person to person type applications?

Wow, thanks guys, that helped me out a lot. Since I'm the kind of person that hates having tons of programs open, I like one program that has quite a few features and uses since I like to keep things organized and whatnot.
Thanks for that link Relyt, i'll keep in mind that it doesn't scan incoming and outgoing mail, but for the most part I don't use a client at the moment, but I will be soon, mainly for the fack that I'm lazy, heh.
And also thanks for the info Nihil, helped me out a bit with one of the slow internet browsing I was having. It seems the program, set on high like I had it, scans every ActivX script and cookie I come in contact with so things were going slow. Lowering it down a bit turned that option off, which doesn't bother me.
Also, incase anyone is wondering, you can schedule it for periodic scans and such as well as give it orders on what to do when discovering a virus on a computer.
