You might want to indicate which linux distro you are using. From what I've seen, many have been using the ALSA Project for their sound control/driver combo.
If you want to configure ALSA
As root run alsaconf
When I installed Slackware 10 I wasn't getting and sound but running alsaconf fixed it.
I think your on freeBSD. It helps to list what your new hardware is if you want help.

thanx muerto freebsd is on different box, I am talking abt redhat9.
how does that alsa thingy work? does one release cover all the sound cards? I got onboard soundcard on intel motherboard.??
you MUST disable the sound in your bios. then it should work.
if it doesnt, then you will have to find some drivers to make it run as the card more than likely isnt supported.
If you're on FreeBSD I may be able to help :)
What version are you running? 5.x or 4.x?
There are slight differences between the two.
Edit: Scratch that. You're configuring sound on Linux and I don't use Linux. But if you need help on FreeBSD...... :D
On freeBSD i am on a command prompt. In that lovely ol machine with 64 MB SDRAM which I believed my friend when bought (was actually 32+16MB :) ) damn it. I was like helpless and I thought now Nomatter what freeBSD will need to b installed on that particular machine.
I find it is not much diff. than linux may b i am still on the scratch. I went into X window by typing x start and i only saw poor shell which look little bit better than that DOS like console.
Is that what freeBSD is? can anyone help me on that . Sorry for changing topic which was originally aimed at linux sound. I just installed alsa let's see if disabling on the BIOS work
But how can sound card work after disabling on BIOS , weired.
X windows is exactly the same on FreeBSD as it is on Linux.
Did you install a window/desktop manager?
I only use GNOME but they all start the same.
To start a window/desktop manager of your choice you'll need to edit (or create) .xinitrc.
My .xinitrc only has this line:
exec gnome-session
This will start X windows with the GNOME desktop if you startx.
If you don't have a .xinitrc startx will run the default xinitrc.
IIRC that starts a few xterms and loads fvwm as a window manager.
These look a bit "antiquated" indeed ;)
Antique indeed, I almost flicked my computer off when I saw twm [I think it's twm not fvwm...] on *BSD... of course Gentoo comes with the same thing, so one gets used to seeing the barenaked X server :)
