laptop heating
well another n00b Q
why is heating a bad thing I mean I know its bad cause it may affect the semiconductors (I think thats the reason) my Q is what damage can it do to my lappy and what are the various methods I can adopt to prevent it also how can I moniter how hot its gotten
yes I have checked out the forum on this and I have found out someof the methods
however I'm asking as to how can I moniter the system.

All depends on what kind of laptop you have...and what kind of chip(celeron,centrino,p4, etc)
CPUs dont do well when hot...causing the computer to freeze up..or operate
rreeeaaalllly ssssssssllooow.
plus the chip creep facture on the boards
as for monitoring I know some oems have thier own tools...all depends on the laptop

Some laptops can get super hot...
As far as prevention goes you could try one of these laptop coolers. There are lots of brands available at most electronics stores.

Laptops are evil. They can cook your gonads. Does it have any diag utilities
that indicate the running temp? I'd just make sure I didn't block the
vents, and don't use it on your lap! LOL

The first thing to do is to make sure that there is air space beneath the laptop and the surface it is resting on.
Remember that these devices are professionally designed and should function correctly if used within their specifications.
I would not recommend overclocking a laptop for example

the laptops a dell inspiron 1150 with a M P4 (is that the same as a P4 M.........?)
and I dont think that it has any such tools atleast none that I know of once again any help is appreciated
and I use it on a table not on my lap I had noticed that as th efirst advice given here in similar Q's
(I actually do search and read the stickies ;-) )

I think the M stands for Mobile as in mobile chip.
AFAIK...dell has system monitoring tools...
If its overheating...call DELL they have excellent warrenty...although you have to get through the *script* reader first. :D

If you cannot find anything in "accessories", "dell accessories" or whatever, boot it into set-up and have a look at your BIOS options.............temperature and voltage readings can sometimes be found there.
