How to organize war game?

Hi,

I have been looking on the Internet and searching this forum about organizing war games, but I couldn't find much details about that. Only thing I could find were sites like try2hack.nl and chess blogs.

Anyway, me and my friends/classmates want to hold a war game, but we don't know how to organize one. From as far as we know, we just need to get a switch and plug in some computers, then install some OS's and thats it.

Is this really all there is to it? or do I need to consider more aspects before I start planning everything?

Say, what would u recommend for a @home wargame party... It is me and 3 friends, so 4 people, and I think a max of 8 computers...

Should I arrange it like, everyone can attack everyone... Give each other missions like 1 needs to crack 3, 3 needs to crack 2, 2 needs to crack 1.. and soon.

Or make 2 defenders, and 2 attacks... :/

Depends on what the goal is. With 4 people, it'll probably be best to start off with 2 against 2 with 4 computers to work with. And then switch the roles after someone has "captured the flag". Once each team has done a round of both "Defender" and "Attacker" then you can do a report or discussion as to how each team did it (what were the vulnerabilities, exploits used, etc.).

And alternative is to do a "Free-for-all" where all 4 are both defender and attacker (bit more challenging in some regards).

Id go with a capture the flag style game. Each person gets a "flag" (some random file) and the object is to collect as many as the enemy's flags as possible. Give each player a specified amount of time to lock down their boxes, then go for broke.

for more of a challange format the boxes you guys are using as "base" for each player an make each person start from scratch. and only be able to use freeware.

I would also suggest multiple routers/switches. that way you guys have a little more to work through. Also set rules on whats allowed and what isnt. Make sure you clarify if malacious attacks (like planting virii on other computers) will be allowed. Or give bonuses for not only getting the "flag" but leaving behind things in specified areas. Like prank virii in the start up. and at the end have everyone restart their computers and see who did what. make it fun and not single dimentional.

I wouldn't use a random file. I'd use the "ultimate" file: passwords. If they can get the SAM (on Windows) or shadow (Linux/Unix) then you win (means getting root/administrative access). :D

Only if you are able to crack it before the sysop changed his/her password ;)

but that doesnt matter.

The capture the flag/file sounds like the best idea...
