verisign alternative?
I am bringing up a new web server and went over to verisign to grab a 128 bit cert. They want $1000.00!!!! I know customers expect to see a verisign cert in a lot of cases but come on. So I wonder what alernatives the AO community is using? Who are some other trusted authorities out there? The only alternatives I have ever used are through web hosting resalers. Digicert for example charges 99 dollars to register a 128 bit certificate. This server will not be widely used by a large public customer base so I don't feel a need shell out 2k for a two year repository.

Thawte is one I have seen, but I don't know what they charge
:)

They charge 99 bucks.
BIG difference.

Godaddy.com offers certs. I forget the pricing though. I know they seemed rather cheap in comparision.

Go to cacert.org for free :P

Falcon,
Great!
Hmm.. but is this a public trusted one, installed by default like Verisign.. ?
Thanks!

Thawte offers SSL certs for 99-149 (depending on the mood you catch them in). They are second only to Verisign in web certificates and are beginning to make a name for themselves. I've used them on a number of occasions instead of Verisign - cheap, fast and professional.

Hi, String
And welcome to AO.
Yeah, it is much the same picture over here. Thawte seem to be #2 on a globally accepted level. That is why I suggested RoadClosed gave them a look.
I think that verisign are getting greedy?
Cheers
:)
