Cracking SAM ??

Yesterday I was watchin Irongeek's vid tutorial of cracking SAM files but I was totally confused regarding it although newbie in this field can senior members guide me to some theoritical links where can I read the stuff about SAM files and Rainbow tables.

There is a tutorial here on AO[1]. You find some description of
windows hashes etc. and further references also here[2].

Please note that LM-hashes were designed ages ago - they
were considered to be "secure" anno 1993. It may be fun to
"crack" them, but I strongly recommend to disable this feature[3].
Since the LM-hashes are so simple, a rainbow table with
a cracking propability of 99.9% is just 64 GB[4].
