Anyone here very familiar with sub7? Pros/Cons?

Ok so I made it years and years on the internet without having ever even heard of what is apparently the most popular trojan there ever was.... Or that is what my reading has led me to believe anyway. So about three days ago some brat said he was sending me sub7 trojan and I thought the file downloaded but he said it was cancelled. I looked up all the info that I can find on the thing to see if it was capable of disappearing and well it sparked curiosity and interest. Now I want to learn more about both sides of internet security.

Anyway, as I was reading the sub7 website I had to wonder if using it on one's own machine was a bad idea. According to other sites it is leaving the computer open to the creator and possibly other users even after deletion. (Althought they deny this is still possible and that the server can be deleted with the client.) Is it really that dangerous even? I mean does something as simple as zone alarm not cancel out any effects that this could have? I installed the legends program onto a computer that I was about to format anyway just to have a look-see and it seems so very interesting to be able to have that much remote control of any computer. The programs online like GoToMyPc cost a small fortune while this is absolutely free. If sub7 is a bad idea, are there any less malicious RATs that one could use to access computers remotely? I want control but I dont want anything screwed up or anyone else in.

I have half a mind to take up programming and perhaps network security myself as interested as I have become in all of the inner workings and behind-the-scenes of computers. Until then someone please answer stupid newb questions. ;)

If you want a decent RAT, try VNC or UltraVNC. They're legit tools, widely used in the biz. For something akin to GoToMyPc, try Hamachi.

Sub7 is quite old, as brokencrow said - BO2K is slightly newer, so you might want to have a play with that if you're interested (but I wouldn't recommend it as an RAT - I use TightVNC for that).

While we're on the topic of sub7 - does anyone know where I can find its source code? I'd like to see how it works.

Ok I am interested in playing with the BO2K one but why would you not use it as a RAT on your own computers?

I basically fix everyone I know's computers. Therefore, having access to my mother at her house, my network, and a couple of others would be very helpful to keeping my rear firmly planted in my bedroom.... Then with my blossoming daughter, having remote visuals to her activities is rather imperative to my sanity while she is on the same internet with the perverts that I talk to. ;) So something like BO2K looks ideal. Of course their website doesnt list any of the drawbacks to using their software. Does it leave holes open in the computer security?

Also I had one of the VNC programs once that was very slow on my own home network. Do these things all take forever just to move the mouse across the screen?

These people talk about an Intel platform. Does that mean that it will not work on AMD? Tell me that it is not saying one must have an Intel chip to use it... I dont even own one intel computer! I have two desktops and one laptop working right now..... ALL AMD.

And I might can get the source code but it will be a lil while....

If you are looking for another alternative, one I found out about very recently is LogMeIn. It's legit, free, and web based so you can access the server computers from anywhere. In addition, I have had no problems with it thus far (after about a week using it) and it seems to run quite fast. As for other VNC programs and their time-delay, check their color settings. I know that makes mine run slower.

Not to beat a dead horse but Sub7, has pretty much been patched out of existance. Just remember (arguably) that the most dangerous Trojans that are currently in circulation have yet to be discovered. I remember the console (Sub7) being very "Skiddie" friendly. heheh

Then again that was back when the lazy peeps. were still using Warez apps. from the likes of Brutus creator "Hoobie", and Dr. Smoke's Toolz, and LOPHT ruled the known universe (before Mudge became a Millionaire). btw. good for him.

It was at that time that some of the younger "crackers" began to realize how much trouble one could get into by "Brute Forcing", and Telnet exploitation, without even having bothered to learn the basics. The term "Skiddie" was born. Damn that was an insult back then! hahaha

Damn funny times they were quite honestly. as everyone under the sun thought they could hack. And sobering for several of my "brighter" colleagues. Can you say Felony? It is amazing how much four months in the slammer will do for your character.

As with any Trojan in those days (as it is now to a certain extent) they depended on the ignorance of the Layman user. Not to mention that social engineering was as easy as pie. (Lemon Meringue plz.)

In those days people were both extremely under-educated, and naive about the dangers of Virii and the like. If you really look at the steady and massive growth of PC "Security" firms over the past ten years, it is not only the result of a marketing campaign but a better understanding/education of computer users. These days anyone with a pulse knows about Spybot. (and yes 12 Billion dollars in marketing, does not hurth their cause).

The conspiracy theorist in me has always been itching to Scream out at the world..................

Anyone else remember netbus? That was a script kiddie program if I have ever seen one... I actually had a teacher ask me to use it to monitor a student in her class that she thought was looking at porn... good times... hehe
