I must draw a conclusion from all this: Don't buy Blu-ray. Not before the Blu-ray camp have finalized the format's specifications.
sh**.....will have to delay my purchase
Well there is nothing new here?
bagggi, you will remember the BSB/Squariel thing over here.......?
Then the Philips 2000, VCR, VHS competition?
If you adopt early in a competitive environment, you stand to lose out?
:)
It's all about timing and promotion. If yours is the better format, if you don't make the majority of the public understand that, you'll still lose.
yes, and to do that you will need the manual data entry device (A rather large bat) because the general public has no concept of the difference between HD DVD and blu ray. The general public had no concept of the difference between VHS and betamax. Why did VHS win? because it was cheaper. So for a while now I have been betting on HD DVD for that one simple reason. Of course, personally I would prefer the higher capacity blurays.
Price played a role, I have no doubt, but the biggest factor to me was saturation. Betamax clearly had the better image, but VHS was everywhere. More titles to choose from. They flooded the market. We've seen this time and again, Macs vs PCs, windows vs. every other OS, etc...
and once a format HAS the market, game over. If I were to re release betamax and charge £1 for the players and 50p for the tapes noone would buy because they already have everything they want on DVD and VHS. I'm not quite old enough to remember the precise marketing campaigns, I just remember getting a betamax at some point and how it always chewed up the tapes.
I never actually had one, but a fellow I used to work with in my early 20s, he had one and I saw it over his house (the guy had everything to do with The Beatles, on betamax tapes)

I would like to see Blue Ray win. But .... the porn industry is going HD DVD. Game over. ;)
