Terminal Server Licensing

I think I know the answer to this, but need to know for sure.


We have 2 servers.

Windows server 2000, windows server 2003 standard.

Up until a few weeks ago, the 2000 server was the PDC and the terminal server. But now, the 2003 server is the PDC as the 2000 server was /dcpromod.

Now the problem I'm seeing is computers that have never RDP'd into the server are getting a licensing error. Computers that have logged into the TS server before it was dcpromod, can still login.


I think, if I've read other posts correctly, that when we did the dcpromo on the 2000 server / TS server, we have basically just shot those licenses out of the water, and will now need to purchase TS linceses for the 2003 server? Since our TS server is no longer a PDC?


Just need a second opinion on this...

MS changed thier server licensing with 2003.

I always just contact by phone with any licensing questions...

Because I have spoken with many vendors that all have thier own personal take on MS licensing....and you can end up with either the wrong licensing or over\under licensed :rolleyes:

I always go the email route and then pop the emails in to a safe :)

As MLF says it depends on your licensing model

I would agree with Nokia on this one, email is always good as you have a hard copy just in case!!

Or if it's by phone, get the rep to email you with confirmation of your discussion over the phone.

Use mstsc /console to log in and kick the other people off. Then go into the control panel -> administrative tools -> terminal licensing (I think thats it) and you can change how many connections are allowed at once.

I think his question was more about the administrative licensing aspect.

I think I got it working ok for now...I installed the licensing server on the 2003 PDC...connected the 2000 server to that 2003 licensing server, and now its allowing connections again from PC's who have never logged in before.
