Hi there RCG,
I have never tried cider, but before I moved from London to the North East coast I used to brew beer and wine.
I think that my greatest success (or disaster) was when I started a ginger beer plant. Well it was fine for a couple of years then things got a bit hectic, and I forgot about it.
Instead of the usual milky brew of about 4.5% ABV, I fetched up with this pale straw coloured, clear liquid...........using my winemaking kit it seemed to weigh in at around 14%.
It certainly caused a few sore heads, and cases of vertical disfunctionality.....not myself I hasten to add...........after all did Lucretia Borgia die of poisoning? :D
I use pre-packaged kits with all the necessary ingredients
to make five gallons of beer. I experiment with cider though.
Five gallons of juice and five pounds of sugar seems about
right. It's like a poor man's champagne.
