One of the least known black persons that made a great contibution to machines and pushed us into modern times was Jan Ernst Matzeliger. For those of you that don't know who he is. He is the inventor of what gets you around from day to day. What we all take for granted. The modern shoe. Shoes had been made by hand producing maybe 15 - 50 per day. How ever he invented a machine that would size and last them to the sole. If you ever go into an older shoe repair shop and see a machine that looks like an old udsidedown steel foot. Thats his machine. I know this because my grandfather used to have one in his shop. So brought the late 1800's into the modern 1900's. So what some may laugh at, I find amazing. He took them from 15-50 pairs of shoes a day to upwards of 600 or more. Now thats what I call a contribution to society. :bigsmile:

I must agree with you KorpDeath my birth mother is 100% Cherokee. She lives on a small reservation in western NC. They have recieved the shaft from our government as well as the blacks. Thats why I have little trust for this government. The tribe has to resort to casino's and alchohol to survive. Which does'nt help things in an economy that is shitty. It may be that at various times throughout history, certain groups have not been fairly treated under each and every ruler of the day. Consider Africa itself, where racism and other isms (is that a word? ;) ) have existed for thousands of years and still persist to this day.
Asia has long seen one group put another down and even destroy them completely. Europe has followed this sad walk as well. Later when the new world opened up, it too carried on these old injustices.
Excuses for this vary, but the effect remains. Due to differences in skin tone, religion, culture, language and many other rationalizations - the problem dogs humanity.
It stands to reason that progress can be made if people want to let it.
i think this is sorta funny.. racism has always been around and not by everyone but everyone suffers from it.. At my school almost everyone has friends of all colors.. but thier parents basicly are the ones that are racist and they basicly say things that thier sons and daughters start to hear so much that they notice it too and say the same things to thier friends and then thier friends start saying it and so on and on
i do not hate any one color or even multi colors but i do hate stupid people and i hate people who act stupid as hell in school mainly when they think its funny to pick on a kid who is mentally retarded and they still need 8 or 9 other guys to back them up. Imagine that.. needing 9 kids just so u can poke fun at someone for sumthing they cannot control.. My friends and i have gotten into 3 fights alone this school year for this kinda crap.. Like when we saw 8 kids who were white and from what the sterotype says they dress "black".. they were pickin on 2 mentaly retarded guys by throwin hard candys at them and telling them the eat them off the floor.. so we got a group of friends together and told them to stop and one of the swong and needless to say a brawl started and it ended with us all being suspended for 5 days out of school.
does that mean it was racist? no.. but if the other 9 guys were black the first thing kids would say would be "9 white kids and 9 black guys were fighting" notice how they say "white kids" but "black guys" ? i notice this alot when whites and blacks fight.. the blacks are not disrespected with a name like "kid" or at least were i come from.
My other example is that of www.blackvoices.com .. if u had a website called www.WhiteVoices.com what is the first few words that pop up in ur head? do i hear KKK ?
so needless 2 say we pay for what people of the past did.

Ok, here we go. This seemed like an innocent enough thread till some people decided to bring the whole 'racism' thing into play so here's my opinion. I'm your average tax-paying law-abiding white person. I drive a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge (neon yellow) and live in a 1100 sq. foot 2-bedroom apartment with my "white" girlfriend who's also a tax-paying law-abiding citizen. We both work full-time, with my job being unix administration and she works in a video game store (Get a gamer chick guys! They rock! You never have to justify a game purchase!). This is all in Tampa, Florida. What do we see every day? Well, living in Central Florida, only 80 miles away from the World's Worst Attraction otherwise known as Disney World, we see tourists all the freaking time. We also have a very large black community (I won't use the term african-american because they aren't). And you know what? I'll give more respect to the blacks I run into when they decide to start bettering themselves instead of STILL bitching about things that happened not in THEIR lifetime, not in their PARENTS lifetime, but about something that neither me nor them had anything to do with. It's called slavery and you know what? Every race on this planet at one point in time or another has had their share of slavery. Oh...the whites never had slavery? Well ****, what would you prefer? Genocide like Hitler did to the jews in Germany or having to be a slave? Take your poison. Do you see them mention that? No. Do you see them mentioning anything else that any other race goes through or has gone through? No. Why? If you want to make a memorial about the WTC event, sure, put every race involved on the monument. It's not going to matter where they're placed in the memorial because guess what, you can't make them happy for shite. But to change an actual picture for dumbass reasons? Hell no.
As for the 'shortest month of the year', are you *****ing stupid? That's the lamest thing I've ever heard. February is 28 days, 29 in a leap year. How is that *that* different than a 30 or 31 day month? Christ on a flaming raft, the things some people say. I bet these are the same people who say 'We should have a black person and a hispanic person represented in the picture with the firemen and the World Trade Center flag. Oh, and one should be a woman.". Good job, you totally ruined the concept of making a memorial statue, period. And the native americans? At least they're working a job, however they ARE NOT LIMITED TO CASINOS AND DRINKING LIKE YOU MENTIONED. If you're going to make a statement like that, why don't you tell the whole story.
Let me go back and state that I have several very good black friends. These are some of the best friends/people I've known and I'll help them out any day of the week. I don't care what race, sex, religion anyone is. If you're good with me, do what you say, and aren't fake and full of shite, I'll be there to help out if need be. These same black people I know do NOT associate with the other blacks I've mentioned. And you know what? They're ragged on too, for "selling out to the white folks". Yes, I've heard that line before. What kind of CRAP is that?
Gah..I could go on and on but I'll stop now. We won't even go into the whole 'it was a racist killing' when a black man SHOOTING AT COPS gets riddled full of holes in Chicago months ago and dies. WTF are you EXPECTING? Not to mention this guy had a rap sheet a mile long, had aggravated assaults recorded WITH the cops, and was overall getting his. That's it. If it had been me and I fired ONE shot at a cop, I'd expect it to be the same ending. Dumbasses...and to think, the interview with the family of the guy made it look like this was a "kid who took a wrong turn". Well he won't now, now will he?
Moral of the story: stop living in a past you didn't have any part of, didn't live in, and move on. Make something of yourself and you can do anything and have anything instead of feeling vindicated when you're not. This goes for anyone..white, black, chinese, thai, japanese, german, irish, english, african, etc...
This system needs a LOT of help.

I do confess however (no offense Preach) that I get sick of the "feel sorry for me because I'm black and mistreated" excuse for everything. It's good to see that in Vorlin's Florida everyone have the same opportunities, no matter the color of their skin. In Norway well eductaed people with another cultural background don't get jobs they are qualified for because of their color.

Nothing's wrong with anyone getting a position as long as it's based on job merit and performance and not on meeting some quota. I've been passed over for a promotion at another company for a unix administration position for a black woman who barely knew what a command prompt was. They gave it to her because "it kept the ground even". She lasted three weeks, getting "relocated to a position that would better suit her" after crashing the production server four times, costing the company God knows what during business hours. What kind of shite is that? I, as a white person, have to compete with others who may or may not have the job qualifications, yet they'll get preferential treatment because of skin color, class, what have you...yeah that's equality.Quote:

Here's my take on it, and I know that I'm once again straying away from the original point of the thread (sorry, Preacher), so I'll keep it short...
Racism is, in whole and all its forms, simply pointless and counterproductive. Plain and simple. It doesn't accomplish any good anywhere it is found, and I would like to think that most of us are intelligent enough to realize that. What disturbs me most is that fighting it appears to make it more prominent, thus giving bigots and racists along with the (for lack of a better term) ''tolerant'' folks more ammunition and bad will towards each other. It's a sick concept that continues to feed upon itself. I believe that we are still generations away from seeing the dismissal of the battle. The fight about it is what fuels the concept. I really believe that at one point in history, people were stupid enough to think that one person was superior to another based solely on appearance and/or background. I like to think that we all know better by now, and those who press on with that blind hatred of others based on superficial characteristics are just looking for an excuse to blame others for their own shortcomings, whether justified or not; or are just nurturing their own sociopathic tendencies by directing bad will towards one group to reflect their overall distaste for humanity. (People who say 'they hate everyone' are usually liars looking to excuse themselves from arguements, through a mask of false ambiguity, because they can't support one) As mentioned in one of the previous posts, racism (the concept) comes down through generations from the parents. So, just teach your children to see the world with different eyes than those who teach their children to target people who look different.
Basically, keep the issue within families, teach the new generation to not see people that way, keep the ****ing politicians and courts out of it, and it will go away....I promise...it just takes some time.

second, the unemployment rate for blacks is higher
third, blacks GPAs are lower than Whites
AND

Let me just verify a few things so people don't get the wrong idea:
1: I'm not racist in any form or fashion. I've helped countless people regardless of anything physical about them all because I either wanted to or because they had the right mentality.
2: I'm tired of seeing good honest working-class people get the shaft in preference for people based on their racial/sex orientation. Too many times I've seen it done and where's the Affirmative Action for Caucasians for me to call when I see this "injustice" done to a white person? Nowhere because it doesn't exist. AA and the NAACP might've been started for good reasons to make sure things are fair and that's fine, but now, in this day and age, it's nowhere near equal. Down in Tampa, a police chief was fired because he said that another police officer-in-training (I think that's the right phrase) was "an orangatuan" (spelling is off on that). It just so happened the chief was white and the p-i-o was black. Do you see this happening if both were white? What if the chief was black and the p-i-o was white? Give me a break...
This is the great thing about kids...their mind is free (mostly) from the harsh discriminations and mental blocks that adults/teenagers have. All they want to do is play. Makes me wish I could go back to that age when it didn't matter if you were (insert really long list here), just whether or not you were a good runner or hitter or whatever.
Anyways, I know I come off as sounding racist on this but hey, they voice their crap every day, I'm voicing mine right now.

as a life long resident of the biggest melting pot in the world, I have seen every variation of what this thread turned into; racism.
society, specifically U.S., has become so hyper-sensitive that we have over compensated what civil rights were set out to do = make all men (& woman) equal. if you are the slightest bit a non white/caucasion male you get bonus points or get the bell curve flipped in your direction. it seems that we have now made the white male a minority. i actually got 10 bonus points on a government test because my grandfather is an american indian. for the love of christ, the last time a saw a teepee was in the museam of natural history!
by no means am i a racist. and NO i don't hate everybody equally. i have gone to war with rednecks, blacks, hispanics, etc... and when it comes down to they are men just like the rest of us. the only difference is that ancestors they could never know were from a different place. and don't say you can relate, because there is no way possible you can emulate their situation!!
