A Plea to the new members

Well where to begin this

im writing this out of frustration of all the meaningless crap that is going on in the forms and i have noticed
it's only the new members who seem to be posting this.Please take a minute to think of what this site is about
Hackers know the weakness in you system shouldnt you ? does this ring a bell to any one ?
General chit chat used to be about hardware and new software for computers now it has become a place for basically any one to post whatever is on there mind to increase post count or for a need of acceptence please understand i am not trying to single any one out im just really mad about
how much the content of the forms have decreased in the space of 2 months like these 2 thread's for an example these are only 2 that are on the main page but im sure if i wanted to do some digging i would turn up much more results
i have tried my best to get thing back in the swing of the techy side but it looks like all the new members are wining and turning this site in to a usenet group to talk about whatever is on there mind

Yes i have been to irc quite a few time's and if you need help in irc you will get it no problem

Prodikal, the General Chit Chat forum is used for just that.It's ANYTHING that wouldnt go into any of the others.If you don't like people posting non tech threads then just don't go there.

my deepest apologies for furthering this kind of behavior and for being a part of it.

I totally agree with you prodikal, i mentioned this before but no-one took any notice.
All this off topic **** isn't what brought me to AO and it certainly wont keep me here.

So to back up prodikal's plee, sort it out, please!

Actually i dont go there i cant seem to bring my self to post in them but there is far to much general chitchat and i will say this again this site isnt a usenet group the first time i came here i didnt have a clue i thought my IP address was 127.0.0.1
and antionline inspired me now im using linux and learning to program just remeber this is a security website
and the reason im mad is because i thinka lot of security post's and technical related threads get OVER LOOKED because of all the crap people post

I'm among quite a few who would agree with you Prodikal, yes members should be circumspect when starting threads, whether new or not. Lascaux also has a valid point, even though I hate BS threads as much as the next guy. So please refrain from negging the guy whoever you are, he's just stating what the Forum description states....

Well Prodikal I both agree and disagree. I believe I can stand on my record that I do post worthwhile replies in the technical threads. I also love the site for its technical content.

However, I enjoy the relaxation of posting to some off topic threads as well. Are there too many? I don't know, that is a personal thing.

The one thing you said that I am 120% in agreement with is the posting to old threads which brings them to the top of the home page again. Personally I peruse this page first to look for interesting topics. The chit chat topics are often fun and entertaining but after a day or two they have been covered and should be resigned to posterity. If the old threads were not brought up again I think things would balance out better. If you note about half of the chit chat threads on the home page are old. Let them retire, they are tired and have served their purpose. They have offered some fun, relaxation, a bit of debate. Now they should rest.

I don't think anyone has a problem with a few off topic posts, a couple of cosmic debates. However I do agree that after a certain number they saturate and detract from the overall quality of an excellent site.

and thats why im trying to say please dont post every little thing that is on your mind or every news article you run across i aggree we need general chit chat sometimes but 10 or more posts in general chitchat a day is rediculos and thats why im so mad and i aint going to go around neggin new members for it it takes a while to find your feet any where new that you go

It's funny, I remember those, "where has all the security gone threads". But, like the man said, chit chat is supposed to be for anything, there is no posting limit. One thing I wanted to say was that threads like this, prodikal, have already been done, many many times. There really is no point in threads like these, because they eventually sink to the bottom. If you are really desperate and/or fed up, then either create a petition or have everybody bothered ask JP to create some kind of sticky or e-mail for new members to read. I was going to create a petition, but my internet time is limited, so I would appreciate it if somebody else did that.

you know most people that have brought this up in the past havent gotten further than a few flames before they delete the thread (i know i did.... i think)

reading over this i come to a quick conclusion...... we need a new forum which its sole purpose in life is simply to be all this other crap that dosnt apply to computers in any way...... and make a user option to show its threads or not.......

Lol, I was gonna make a post on this a long time ago, but figured I would get banned for it. I remember ppl brought it up and got negged with messages like "Ao is for everybody" and that kinda thing. Maybe we need to have new members get a certain amount of points before they can start threads.

general chit chat has been around for a long time... and the reason for the general chit chat is for all posts... technical or non. anything that can't fit in somewhere else. where would you suggest people post these threads. i agree that some threads have no need to exist, but that is just my opinion. the ones i don't like i don't read. just that simple. i understand your frustration... but over time you realize that there are lots of people who post lots of useless things in general chit chat and that's why it's there

I have the feeling that things began to seriously slip when the "Tech humor" forum has been created. A lot of newbies understood the creation/existence of it as a permission to post useless and crappy threads. And NOT ONLY in the incriminated forum.

Maybe if more people posted more open ended questions, For example “The advantages and disadvantages of different ways of port scanning” the level of security conversation in AO would increase, but only if people respond to them in a way that will encourage the discussion.

Yes ,I agree with you SittingDuck, there are some tech and security questions which are not answered. But I could also say it's a minority of questions and that it's maybe because there a lot of useless/crappy posts which send quickly interesting tech threads in graves.
