Xp full of bugs

Why is it that Win XP has so many bugs in it? I mean they say that this OS is suppose to be advanced but it isnt. Microsoft seriously needs to sit down and determine which direction that they should be taking. Are they going to develope better operating systems? or are they just going to keep doing worse. Win Xp was suppose to be better than Win 2k but for some reason it turned out to be really bad. If any body out there disagrees I'm sorry but this is how i feel. I hope you guys do not get take any offense to this post. If anybody agree i will be morer than happy to hear from you becasue i know other people out there feels the same way i do.

yea i feel that everything coming from m$ is getting worse and worse...they used to be just plain bad...then terrible...and now they want to own you and your system...... jus a little hint, go open source and forget waiting around for m$ to get their act together, cuz they WON'T! :D lol jus pick up some sort of bsd, unix, or linux distro...whichever fits your needs cuz chances are good that atleast 100 will come close and quit a few will fit about 99.999999999999999999999999999999% to your needs, if not perfect.... i recommend RedHat, but it's open source and there are billions of different setups to choose from, so whatever floats ur boat c ya

XP home i've heard is rather 'junky' but pro is the one to be getting, only thing is that you need a decent computer to get any decent stable performance out of it, for me it has been their best o/s yet, only thing that is annoying is this product activation junk, its just another cost to bear on top of buying the stuff in the first place

ive never used win2K on any of my machines so I wouldnt really know from my personal point of view, but i have used it on uni computers, yes it was stable and quick but didnt have the added functionality that XP pro gives

I installed XP,and shortly after went right back to Win 2k.XP just didn't work out for me.I'd prefer to do away with M$ products all together,but I have a starband DSL and the mission control software isn't compatible with anything but Windowz.I have Mandrake on my other box though,andf it's great.I think I'll be switching to Redhat soon though.

I really haven't had any problems with XP (pro version), and I've been running it since before the release date over a year ago. I've had the odd app or so freeze up on me (easily remedied by ending the app via taskmanager) but other than that, I have no gripes with WinXP. No frozen system, no 'blue screen of death', no problems with the OS itself. I can leave it running for weeks on end and it responds just like it did 5 minutes after I booted it up. Yeah, I know it's big and bulky compared to Linux but so what? I've got a system that handles it easily enough and have resources to spare. If I had to gripe about anything, it would be the fact that some older apps and games won't run under XP...but I've always got the option of running another version of Windows (and no...I'm not THAT desperate) or whatever if I so choose. Linux is a great OS (based on my limited experience with it...I can't find drivers for my DSL modem) but I can't bring myself to call it more secure than Win XP just yet either. Actually, none of us can really make that call until Linux is as widely used as Win is because until that happens, Win is going to be the primary target for hackers and kiddies alike and thus be more prone to have shortcomings exposed.

Just to clarify, I am NOT anti-Linux....I hope that Mr Torvalds 'offspring' blows M$ out of the water ASAP. I am saying that if you get the right flavor, Win XP may actually surprise you. I know it sure shocked the crap out of me.

I've been running xp home and my wife xp pro since February. In that time, I've suffered one freeze and she's had one. For MS, that's a pretty good track record. I even managed to get their SP1 downloaded and installed without a hitch which I considered a real feat.

Overall, I'm happy with it, and even more so since I got all their little "things" disabled, such as auto update, windows messenger, and a few other things that allow them to help make my computing experience better. I prefer to manage my own "experience."

XP with SP1 home installed works quite nicely. I admit there were quite a number of times I experienced that blue-screen situation where I had to restart the machine, but otherwise my XP machine enjoys quite a fair run of uptime, and its been a long time since I had to restart the machine when I didn't want to. SP1 really has improved things it seems (or so it seems). :)

XP (home) works fine with me too. Can't even remember when it last fatally crashed.

I have to disagree with lloydr here... If one wants to play games, Windows is the only alternative. Sad but true. The gamehouses won't port their games for Linux because not much enough people use it and people don't use Linux because there's no games for it. Might be because Linux is missing a standard like DirectX.
If you are happy with XBoing, XTetris and those, then Linux is a good option...

i have an XP home box @ home and an XP pro box @ work.
my pro box i've had to reload the OS three times now due to degradation. it crashes constantly, will not end task when told, takes at least 3 minutes for a log on, often takes as long opening files off the network. when i reload the OS doing a clean install, it will be fine for a week but after that it starts with the bad again. every time i update to sp1 but no changes.
my home machine on the other hand, after a few trial and errors, i got running perfectly. go fig. that os is supposed to be based on ME which is absolutly atrocious!

I installed XP on my laptop about 6 months ago and as to date has yet to crash or freeze on me <knock on wood>. There were a few programs that wouldn't run on XP home edition but I'll trade that for the stability this release has brought to me. I also have a linux mandrake desktop computer set up next to my laptop. Whenever there is something windows can't handle, I know it won't be a problem for linux.

I've been using XP Pro on an old Pentium 2 333mhz with only 128mb of RAM on it. It's running just fine and has had no problems since I installed it.

It's got 182 days of uptime right now, and the only reason it had to be rebooted then was because the keyboard I had was a piece of junk that kept locking up. Oh and this machine I'm talking about gets used on a regular basis and hard at that :)

I think XP Pro is really good, ok there are some Hardware issues and it is quite a hog on the system...but it's stabile as a rock....and fairly secure....

I am happy to see that somebody is at lease getting good results for win XP. It is stable and can stay on for a long time without rebooting, but where my problem is coming from is it not being able to run a lot of programs. I mensioned this a while ago when you moved a file from the directory it used to be in, you will continously get error messages such as the main module not found. That is where my problem is coming from. I have to agree with you guys other than that it is pretty stable and runs pretty well. It just has too manu bugs for me to deal with if i can't run my files then there is no reason to have that OS on my box. Thanks a lot everyone for bringing your experiences and thoughts. I will stil like to hear from other people out there.:)

Wot??.....um I think ther's something wrrong with you'r XP...coz that doesn't happen to me.

I know now i am starting to think that i am the only one this happens to. I mean everybody is having a good time with their XP and i am the one company and mad. Even though i have a right to be mad because i paid a lot of money for this OS and i feel like MS ripped me off. So if you guys are having a good time with your XP keep doing so. I know there are other people that feels the same or got the same deal with their Xp i'm just not hearing from them on a couple. If you hear other peoples experience you will then understand why i am mad. Because i am not the only one that happens to. I don't have anything against MS other than i feel like they are ripping me off. I don't know about u you guys but that is what i think. i still want to hear from other people. All aside, everyone knows that DOS was Microsoft's best Product (ever!)

well I haven't had any software problems, and there is a TON of stuff installed on that machine.

BUT I do know of others that are having those problems, so I think I'm in the minority. I know of one huge network that is not using XP because of the compatability issues with the software that is present on that network. When I say huge I mean in the hundreds of thousands of computers.

Microsoft bought dos from a guy at seattle computer products called q-dos (quick dirty Operating System) it was kinda like vp\m and bill bought it from him cause IBM wanted something to run on there PC so bill gates bought it and named it MS-dos (Microsoft Disk Operating System) and for my two pennies, what about when they were selling Xenix? Microsofts own UNIX flavor? lol sorry. needed to pop that in

XP is good, but at the same time it is bad. I mean from security holes like crazy to updates on almost a daily basis. I agree the OS is extremly stable and very reliable, i mean i have setup many test enviroments and actually tried to make XP crash. the most i can get was an app to hang and that was easily remidied. I would say if only they could make it smaller and less vulnerable it would be a charm. I have also tried LUnix Redhad on the same machines i was testing xp on and they responded the same. Actually xp booted up quicker and was up and ready before my lunix machines came up. Lunix tended to hang a little longer but never crashed. Both machines i have left on for about 30 days and when i wake them up, the xp always seems to wake up quicker from its sleep than lunix. Both good OS but XP is what mainstream buisness are using and till lunix gets the fame it needs to impact the buisness line will it become a major player in this os race.....ahhhh done..

I definitely agree that if MS can make XP smaller and less vulnerable it would be a good OS. They need to work on the statues of the bugs that is found in their OS's. If they are coming out with anything new, i hope it has less bugs and is less vulnerable. Also eazy to work with and config. I think Bill Gates is doing this things on purpose. I think that he purposely puts the bugs or he knows that the bugs are in the OS and most of the times the bugs are there for a reason. Like somebody said, " When you delete your files or format they are not completely deleted you have to reboot your box for like 31 times to get the files of the box completely. Like i said earlier MS needs to sit down and think about their next move and how they can improve their OS's. People are seriously getting tired of all the errors and bugs that XP displays all the time. I don't think everybody is thinking like i am but they need to really think about their next move.

Yeah, that's a valid point, but sitting down and chatting won't do anything. The way they code there OS is a strong problem, because obviously there are too many bugs while coding. They need to stop going for a tighter or stronger look and focus on the security issues. I'm not sure the news story, but even a member of there own team admitted they had so many bugs. Now that's when you KNOW your doing something wrong. You also gotta keep in mind that he doesn't give a damn what is in the OS, the guy is rich (or get's richer) either way, buggy or not. It's sad, yet true.

You are definitelly correct i mean bill gates just sits on his butt and make money while we over getting operating systems that are full of bugs. Until we actually do something about this we he will never realize that we do not appreciate that. It seems that a lot of people likes Win XP and i am happy to hear that they are having a better time with than me. I just think that until somebody or company actually challenges MS and come out with something that is way better and threatens to run him out of business he will never realize that people want something that is less vulnerable and less bugs.

Wtf?!?!?! Ever hear of Linux? Talk about something that challenges Microsoft, it Owns Microsoft. Any Linux distro (IMHO) would give M$ competition, any day! That's me though, I don't know about you people. ;)

Linux is good but it does not have the kind of popularity that it needs to be really know and challenged. Linux is popular only by us people that are into computer security. Normal or regular users are not as drawn into Linux as we are. So until we can get those people out there to realize that Linux will run M$'s Win XP out of the window, Linux will always be less known and used by people out there.

Hrmm.. Ya might have a point, that's why it's opensource and that's why it's distributed widely. It is free (except S&H from what I know) and is worth the price of the $2.00 you pay for shipping and handling. It's more secure and stable then any M$ OS (IMHO) and is definitely the better OS (again, JMHO). Why would you pay so much for a buggy thing that isn't stable at all. I'll admit, it isn't as popular as M$, but that's why it is being advertised and that's why people like me tell people to try it out and I'll install it for them. Microsoft has contracts with all the main Computer companies (Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway) and in that sense, all of their computers are set to have the latest version of Windows auto-installed on the computer. That's why It's good to tell people about Linux and to get them to give it a shot.

We can get this accomplaidhed with the help of many people telling ther frieds about linux and telling them to try it. I sound like i am trying to start something up but i'm not. I just think that people should get their moneys worth.

Heh, they should, and with M$ they don't. With Linux, all your paying is S&H for something which is more Stable and Secure. Talk about a no-brainer..

Give Linux a few more years. It's growing more popular by the day or week, and easier to operate. Remember, 90% of computer users want an OS they can turn on and not have to think about using. They don't want to have to type in anything, or if they download software, they want it to open automatically. They want to use the computer and not have to think. Turn it on, click on an icon and it's done.

I don't know how far Linux has come in recent years. I'm using a couple of years old version of Slack on an old 486 box that runs our home network, and that I play with when the wife isn't online. Surely, Linux has made huge advances in the last 2-3 yrs. Still, I doubt the ease of use is equal to windows yet, and when that's overcome, watch linux take off.

I have XP pro on my laptop and apart from a few nightmares at installation with trying to get drivers for some of my devices and the fact that it decided I no longer required my e-mail address book so it deleted it for me. I have no idea why this happened. I upgraded from 2000 pro. Since then it has run just fine. I did however take it off my desktop as getting drivers for some of my existing peripherals to work was becoming another pain. Also a number of my kids (include me in the kid bit) games wouldn't work so it had to go. I also removed a bunch of the startup items so it would boot up the same day as I switched it on !!!

I agree ME is atrocious. Which is what I was left with on the desktopPC. I simply modified the start up and it seems to have settled down perhaps un upgrade to win 2000 or a downgrade to win98SE is in order there. Any opinions out there on this one?

Now this is what I am talking about. We all are getting bad results from most of M$ products. This actually proves that nobody from M$ cares about what they sell to there costumers. I have to agree with chuck56, people these days are more into easy life. Nobody wants to do anything after they turn on their box. They just want to click on icons and be on their way. Doing so M$ takes advantage and sells them crappy OS knowing that the people have no idea what they are doing, if something goes wrong they will go and waste their money trying to fix something that they can fix themselves. If they get to know the kind of products that they are buying and how many bugs that it contains. I think they will prefer to use something that will be a little harder because you have to do more than click an i con, than get someting that is easy but they will lose a lot of money on.

I am using XP Pro since 6 months and cant remember any serious crash till now.But only drawback is that it crashes when you play big old games like Need for Speed

Another issue that will slow Linux up is that of compatilbilty. People want to know if their existing programmes and hardware will work under Linux. I know that UNIX programmes can work on Windows boxes using software such as exceed emulator. I've spent enough time in front of an HP openview screen on an NT box using exceed and that works just fine. The question is, does it work the other way? Might sound like a dumb question but as I have never used Linux I would like to know myself.

If this is the case then Linux needs to get its act together and advertise this. We won't get a decent deal out of Bill Gates until he has reason to give it to us. That means he needs some serious competition. I have a lot of sensetive data and can't afford the down time if I screw about with the OS and half my stuff won't work. Call it ignorance but it's an ignorance a lot of ordinary people live with and will keep us from a better deal. If I know that my data is safe when I change the OS then I will change it. But if I have to buy a bunch of expensive software on the back of that change, then I won't.

Heh, Win98/ME is built alike and WinXP/2k is built alike. So if you have WinME, don't downgrade to Win98 (dunno why you'd want to downgrade anyways), but upgrade. Personally, upgrading to me would be in a lInux version (Redhat 8.0! :)) and not a Window's version. Like I've said, if you want the best (IMHO) M$ system, it's Windows 2000. That's JMHO though, so take it as you would any other opinion.

Ok, that takes us to the compatability issue. What would I have to do to allow current software to run on Linux? I'd have to fight off 2 teenagers if their games were screwed ;) and I have enough on my plate without that :P

As for the downgrade option. When dealing with ME then going back to '98 isn't so much a downgrade as a stability upgrade. IMO for what it's worth :)

i like xp corporate edition except for one thing if i run trillian or media player and i close them out right my system restarts. and its pissing me off now if i do not run media player and use some other media player every once in a while it will restart. my config for this box is: 1.1ghz amd duron, 80 gig wd hdd, 256mgs of pc2100 ddr ram and the msi elitegroup K7VTA3 motherboard it maxes out at 3 gigs of ram and 3ghz cpu. any ideas ????

I use XP Pro and just love it, barely ever had any problems, except some I created myself for beeing careless and loading a trojan or other things. Some bootups the system will hang tho. I've used Xp since the betas almost 2 years ago. Their BEST OS ever. Worked on all their OS'es from DOS 1.0 actually, except Millenium. Now, ofcourse, I'm the extremely meticulous type and a systems engineer. I use special software to track installs, etc.. and go thru registry and services to disable what I don't need, but messing around w that kinda stuff could actually make t system more instable.
I'm a technician on Mac's and have used Linux for a couple of years too b4. Can't say that either is better than XP. Linux "might" be more stable, ofcourse better for running such things as a game server, but both give me at least as much headache as MS OS'es. Linux is (or was at the time I used it which was when everyone said it was sooo easy and great) a bitch installing everything in and especially a bitch getting latest drivers for all newest hardware (compared to XP for ex.)
Security wise I can inform you that Linux hackings and trojan/virus making is the largest expanding area, greater than on MS systems at the moment. Linux is getting more used in companies and therefore now getting targeted by hackers. Last months it's been shown that Linux is actually not very safe at all. My brother is one of the few specialists on secure money transaction methods in the world, not to say that others don't know more, but not that many tho. According to their tests the safest OS of all, even including UNIX, is win 2k/XP.
I AM impressed w the work MS has put in the last year on testing, solving, and putting out security patches/solutions continuously and really trying to make it as safe and secure as possible.

I do WISH I could use another system than MS since I do HATE big bullies and always want to support the little ones. I've been in court more times than most of u hear fighting big companies, but I still have to separate the damn bitch company and what I think of their products.
Don't see many complaining that much on all the gaming companies. I've had so many games I havn't been able to play because they are **** (crash, freeze, etc.) when they go gold and then they spend next year releasing patches and some of the games never work anyway on my system, like NWN which I have given up totally. Was looking forward to that game for over a year. Others never had ANY probs at all w it. Just the way software and hardware still works, until the day when computers go intelligent.

True, but we all know how nice Microsoft is to it's competition. :rolleyes: I mean, look what the XBox is doing, it recently bought Nintendo's right hand producer, RareSoft. They lost alot of money in a company that's dying IMHO, but that's what they are willing to do to stay on top. Microsoft, plain and simple, doesn't like competition and wants to be #1 in everything. Sadly, they are in operating systems which is why many people (myself included) like to promote Linux and Opensource software. OpenSource Forever! :)

it's great to see linux doing well, i'm relatively new to unix systems but i can't wait for the day i delete windows permenantly. (says the guy in front of a windows box...) i actually saw linux on the news last week described as 'emerging competition' for M$ so maybe more people are becoming aware of their options.
