Hacking the Matrix

I have to say that while watching the movie I've been quite impressed by hacking scene, it was just realistic.

What do u think Ed WOOD movie or hacker movie?

As soon as I saw that scene... a big smile came across my face.

I then looked around quickly... and nobody seemed to know what Trinity was doing. It took me 10min to explain to my GF that she had exploited a hole in SSHnuke on the machine and that is how she gained access. I then showed her how people break into computers by footprinting, enumerating and attacking (using PCs on my LAN of course). She now has a greater appreciation for computer security... which she didn't have before. She thought all those countless hours of me reading and playing on the PCs was just a waste of time... after all... I could have been watching Friends with her. *yuck*

It was pretty cool from a security enthusiast's POV to see something like that. Now only if we can get nmap to run that fast...

On a side note... which is completely off topic:

The theater I went to uses a ticket machine that you pickup tickets after you purchase them online. This is a good idea, as there is nothing I hate more than standing in line to find out that the show you want to see has just sold out. The service is called Fandango .

I went to pick up my tickets and the ticket machine was down. I motioned for an employee and a tech walked up to it right as I was trying to get my ticket. Seems that the machine had crashed... or lost power or whatever. I looked over his shoulder as my GF went off to get our tickets from the window and he powered it on. To my surprise it was running RH7.3. I didn't get too good of a look at what was starting up but noticed that he had plugged in a small portable keyboard into the back of it. A completely unprotected port. Just remove a little panel on the side that is secured by nothing. I thought it was a good idea to have a machine there which you can pickup your tickets... but bad idea to leave the ports open to anyone. It is in a high traffic area.. so the chances of someone tampering with it and not getting noticed are pretty low... but it has a credit card reader on it and depending on the setup... that data can be stored on the machine, or possibly intercepted. I don't know much about the setup and can't find much about it... yet.

Anywho... I thought that it was pretty cool that they were using linux on it. Up until the past few years... you'd have to look long and far to find places that have linux installed. at least visibly.

She is pretty good about me and computers... but she wouldn't dare ask me a question. She doesn't like sitting through those 20min answers... LoL

Another good aspect and practice really for would be security experts is the "enter the matrix" game available on xbox and PS2 etc. There is a hacking option allowing you to hack into the game to allow you to view the fmv files showing clips of the movie etc etc and involves guessing passwords and obtaining access. A mix of unix,dos etc commands and is fun as well as educational in the mindests needed for hacking. relatively easy binary based passwords and clues are in game and in films and also require just raw brainpower. So yes "hacking the matrix" is certainly almost real now and fun.

And NO for those stuck on it im not giving you the answers to the passwords or wheree the clues are, there not that hard anyway !

On another note, yeah, NMAP was used in the movie. Wow, was I blown away (that was also sarcastic). C'mon, what year is the movie supposed to be set in? 500-600 years from now NMAP will still be the port scanner of choice? Hmm. I guess if thats what excites you...to each his own.

ya, the game will allow u to use dos commands to "hack the matrix" but it is limited, but i haven't seen the movie yet, everytime i go to regal cinemas in peoples plaza (u know where phish) its always sold out, but i'll use fandango now i guess, i think there is like a surcharge of about 1.75$ i am not sure, but anywayz thats for the info phish, pz.

Meloncholy, it wasnt 500-600 years from now, the matrix was actually around 2000-2001 since in the first one it was stated that the year was 1999 in the matrix, not the real world so it would work out better and so forth.

Hmm. I thought the story line was something like terminator where machines in the future had taken over the world. I thought that life in the "matrix" was based on 1999 becuase that was the most desirable or suitable time in human history, but reality was really in the distant future.

Its all fuzzy now. Now I have to watch it again!!

Interesting that fandango uses Red Hat.
The ABOs at the AMC movie theatres use a version of windows CE (that appears to be realated to the HPC windows CE).

Judging from the age of some of the older guys in Zion, they've been around for quite some time, easily 70 or 80 years.

Assuming that Zion is allowed to thrive for the same period of time before being destroyed in each subsequent version of the Matrix (it IS run by exacting machines, after all), 6 (five previous versions plus the current) * 75 = 450. So, my guess is that the current version of the Matrix is about 450 years ahead of the time the machines first took over. Morpheus states in the first movie that the year inside the Matrix was set to be 1999. However, he also says, "I can't say for certain what year it is because we honestly do not know." He then says that from the bits and pieces of evidence, blah blah blah, "Sometime at the beginning of the twenty-first century, mankind was united in celebration at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI . . . a singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines..." So, anyhoo, my thought is that the current Matrix is around 450 years from perhaps this decade, so years 2450-2460. I could easily be wrong, since I'm not as much of an "expert" on Reloaded as I am on The Matrix.

Perhaps my thoughts will spread some light on the subject. If not, it gave me something to do while sitting through this boring Business Law class. Bleh.

The guy that they placed on the examination table near Neo? *shakes head* I don't think so. Cypher kinda got killed pretty good last time around. It was the guy that was taken over by an agent earlier on... the one who cut his hands... and walked toward the departing crew of the Nebuchadnezzar as if he wanted to use the knife once again... Evidently, he was taken over by an agent in the "real" world as well as in the Matrix.

Which, along with Neo's magical stopping of the attacking sentries, poses an interesting question. Could the "real" world actually be a sub-Matrix? We know that Neo has the power to stop bullets and such inside the Matrix... but does that have any effect on him in the "real" world? If not, then the "real" world would most likely be another layer in the Matrix onion. If so... then he's just frickin' awesome!

to meloncholy, the creator of Nmap was happy to see it used in the movie, he also said it worked a hell of a lot faster, so in the furure yes it could still be the tool of choice, just redesigned and running faster.

does Anyone remember that picture for the original Matrix movie? The one where they show that the Matrix was made on Free BSD machines?

Never saw it... sounds intriguing though. If anyone finds a link, I'd love to see it.

HOLY ****!!!!! I just looked at http://www.freebsd.org/gallery/ for the first time..... all these sites using Free BSD...talk about an OS with bragging rights and gold balls.

When I saw Trinity hacking with a real *nix box, the movie impressed me all over again. I hated seeing that crap in the first Hackers movie, where they were hacking with what looked like flashy screensavers. Matrix Reloaded really out did it self. I've got a whole new respect for this movie.

Networker, no i dont know him personally. Im just in his mailing list :p I get mails from him about every update, patch, information, and sometimes even offtopic stuff. Thank you, I have been telling my friends that I saw the movie it wasnt him and they wouldnt belive me. I didnt get a good enough look at the guy to notice it was the one that agent smith took over but I got a good enough look to know that it wasnt cypher. Now I can be 100% positive when I am calling them dumb asses

No, I don't get it? Why would you neg and not explain yourself. For those that neg and leave an explanation, I'm fine with that. The rest of you are immature children. Are you mad because there is'nt a SSHnuke exploit? Are you mad because I put down what I thought? For those that have not grown up, there is something called constructive criticism. Just don't neg and say "you suck". If I embarrassed you or offended you, reply with a witty comeback. I liked the Matrix like everyone else here, but I thought some of the comments here were a little funny. I guess the age of the people who neg me really shows, oh well.

And yes, I stayed all the way till after the credits to see the trailer for the next one. In my opinion it doesn't look as good as this one was, but we'll just have to wait till November to actually see.

The movie scene was l33t (of course, anything spawned from Matrix or Matrix Reloaded is bound to be the best), It's about time they actually 'tried' to please the phreaks and tekkies out there. But another thing that was pretty nice, although kinda dissapointing, was the "Hacking" Menu on the "Enter the Matrix" game. That was the first thing I did when I played the game. I hadn't even jumped into the single player yet. Although very easy, it was one of the first attempts to please us. Lol, and no, I'm not giving away the solutions, puzzles, passwords, or symbols. You hafta do it yourself. It's really really easy. So just think. Later.

i remember when i watched the first Matrix movie, i saw neo was using one of those things that search the net for you and you can get paid to sleep basically, now you have to understand, that was the first time i saw a movie with anything close to hacking ni it, to me the hole movie was about hackign, theyd find a way into the matrix, go in, then tank would find another way for them out. i loved it.

another thing, just because im me and i usually make you people laugh anyway, you all know that i have a thing for pills and i enjoy a good time with them..well not as much as i used to because iv slowed down but anyway to the point.

When Morph asked neo which pill he would take, i kinda laughed to myself thinking if he was asking which gore would take, cause i was like "haha what if i take both, will i have a hallucination about the truth and wake up believing that instead?"

just had to toss that comment in, it made me laugh.

You guys shame me. I watched the movie and enjoyed it immensely but didn't catch the NMAP reference. I need to watch the movie again though, was she hacking from within the same intranet or supposedly from a remote location. If she was remote then the IP found would never have been detected since it is one of the reserved addresses and would not have been passed by intervening internet routers.

I only point this out to attempt to retrieve a little dignity from the fact that I missed the whole thing in the first place.

However, I like the speculation made earlier that with Neo affecting the sentinels there might be an underlying second matrix. However it might also be that he has developed an affinity for the signalling used by the machines and computers. They would need to have a way to communicate and monitor their sentinels so it could be this datastream that was picked up either by his interface or, do we dare go here, ESP and he affected things that way. However, I still like your theory of a matrix within a matrix. Just how deep does the rabbit hole go?

Let me just state that I really enjoyed the second movie. It is too early for me to compare or judge it vs. the first Matrix. I can say that like the second Star Wars I was just happy it wasn't a cheap knockoff exploiting the popularity of the original but was a good time in its own right. Whether it is better, equal, or less than the original does nothing to affect that in my opinion a series of good movies is always better than one good one. Godfather III was not as good and I and II (IMO) but it is part of a great series. Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future are great examples of where the series is made better by a series of good movies and while one may stand out to one individual over another the whole is strengthened by each. Now we have two more classics being added to this list with the Lord of the Rings and the Matrix series (some may add the Terminator series here too and I would not be opposed to that inclusion). It's a good time to be a Sci Fi and movie Fan.

Finally I also stayed for the preview. All I can say is that the credits are so long it isn't worth it. It isn't a bad preview but you know you will see it a bunch before the third one is released. Like a good trailer it entices but does not give away the direction or plot of the third movie. Stay if you like but I was not impressed enough to recommend it.

Amen! I've never really considered myself much of a Sci Fi fan, but the Matrix (referring to it as if it is one entity) has made me come out of the closet on that matter.

Thanks for the compliment Phirephreak. No I don't make a living doing papers for people although I must admit I did help write some for my wife when she took English at our local community college.

My job is a security officer for now, I do hope to teach and I am working towards my teaching certificate but I want to teach math and computers not English. After all I am the right age for a mid life crisis and therefore a radical career change (think I'll keep the wife though, she is gorgeous, sexy and earns a good salary as well :) ).

Besides the above ^ all I can say is I think its about damned time peaple are actually throwing in a few real computer related topics into movies that involve computers. (IE) The net, Anti-trust, & now the Matrix reloaded. As for hackers and sword-fish.... yuck those guys got some really ugly and HUGE looking computers from the movie wargame and then they put over the top 3D-GUI in them and then in the end all they did was make a movie that had nothing to do with real computers. LMAO

Yeah. Anyhoo, funny that you should mention Hackers, Swordfish, and The Matrix in one post... three of my movies. The Matrix cause it just rocks, Hackers cause it has a cool story.. and computers... *nod*, and Swordfish because John Travolta was perfect for his role, and it's just a cool movie.

And if anyone enjoys the action aspect of The Matrix (who doesn't?), I'm gonna recommend that you rent Equilibrium. Story similar to Fahrenheit 451, but action far surpassing The Matrix. Watch it!
