Please Help Me!!!

I need help..and I found this page by accident looking for something in search and thought it could help me...about half an hour ago..I was talking on MSN messenger with who I thought was a friend...after a couple of minute talking he tells me it's not my friend, but a friend of my friend....well...we kept talking...I got really mad at him and the last thing he said before he went offline was that I shouldn't talk to him like that because I didn't know who he was....I then proceded to call my friend...he said that who I talked to was no friend...but a hacker....now I'm afaid that because of how I talked to him, he might hack me...and I just survived the SASSER virus...I don't need this now. I'm here because I know nothing of computers. The only protection I have on my computer is Norton Systemworks 2002 and what I know of this is how to do a scan for viruses. My friend said I needed a firewall....I don't know what this is, only that it's for protection, so I know less where to get one and how to put it in my computer. So if some one can help me, THANK YOU!!! :(

first of all...dont worry. Relax and breathe. Did you direct connect with him by any chance...or receive any files from him? #1, he's most likely not a hacker. your friend connected to MSN through a public computer, MSN saved his username and password, and anyone using that computer could connect through his account without having that information. Have your friend change his password.

Well what you can do if you dont' wanna go buy a firewall, is download a free version of one.

Thats a good free firewall right there. That will give you more protection that what you have right now.

Also I suggest some form of spyware/adware protectiong.

Also how are you connected to the internet? Cable? DSL? dial up?

Thanks...but it's pretty hard to breath....especially that my screen just turned off....

he is a hacker....my friend knows of computers and he said that yes it is a hacker that by some way hacked his account. He put a firewall but sometimes the guy still gets through.

I didn't accept nothing from him.....can he still hack me??? :(

Most of the "hackers" out there couldn't get through a firewall if their life depended on it. Now there are a few that could, but your probably dealing with a script kiddie. lol

Just grab the firewall, install it and you should be ok.

how does your friend know his account was hacked...read my previous post. MSN saves your username and password on all computers that u use. Unless you sign out, and click sign in with different username....his account could be saved anywhere he has used it...and anyone using that computer could log on with his name.

does that come with instructions or something?

I don't know how he knows...but he does...

Its pretty straightforward.

Just download and doubleclick it.
Then a wizard will guide you through it.

bruja, a hacker, very rarely has the time or the will or the desire to hack someone's MSN password....even for shits and giggles....they wouldn't even bother. Its most likely my suggestion about this...just have your friend change his password. Some kid connected through his account and he thinks he's l337...hackers just wouldn't bother....its not even fun anymore hacking other people's IM programs.

being as no one else seems to have mentioned this -

since you say you didn't accept any files etc from this 'hacker' and being as you use dialup - you'll probably be ok. Your IP address will change next time you connect via dialup so if he is really after you he'll have to hunt for you again (unless he can actually write his own programs and managed to get a trojan or similar onto your box without you knowing - which by the sounds of things is not likely). However the above is all good advice which I recommend you follow as well.

Dont want to offend anyone here, but this thread looks like those created by guys doing social engineering (common on IRC too). A helpless person, crying, with a big problem, and everybody tries to help him/her.

If someone knows almost nothing about computers, how he got here? This site is well known at IT comunity, not by general public.

Hes not asking how to hack. Hes askig how to defend himself, which is what we are all about.

I learned how to get here reading the Maxim Magazine...or was it Stuff? one of the two...somehow they hooked me with a 7 year subscription...I dont even think they're going to be around that long...anyways...I dont see much information give out that a social engineer could use to hack someone???Until any red flags pop out...he's still a victim.

I found this page doing a search on hackers on google, so I can learn more about them. But I found this page and forgot about my search.

Perhaps from Internet.com? We can't assume that it is a social engineering ruse. Even if it is, what does it achieve? Makes us look like fools for trying to help?? Is that so bad? Unless he begins asking someone to do something for him, we shouldn't really assume anything. Reality is a good security geek will always have a bit of paranoia when helping someone but that paranoia shouldn't stop them from providing help. Moderation, as they say, is the key.

But if another "new" member show up on this thread, start to tell advices to the helpless person, "leaking" some ideas about how hacking works and everybody starts to contribute (or even contradict him), will match the behavior (helpless viticm, a bunch of good guys, another guy (new too) start to spill ideas, good guys contradict and explain how is the right thing... - looks as a signature to you? - i see a lot of them)

but sorry, im probably wrong

(anyway if i was correct, the guy will try on another way :P )

just to sum this all up, usually hackers will not get your computer address through a chat unless you send him some kind of file. if your using dialup you don't have to worry very much but it is still a good idea to have a firewall... a firewall basicly blocks anything from connecting to your computer that should not be connected.

i think a good peace of advice is to to goto windows update and make sure that your all patched up with the leatest security updates....
