Digital Fortress, Deception Point, Da Vinci Code, ANgels & Demons....all by Dan Brown, all are awesome. He's currently my favorite writer. Maybe because those are all the bokks i read :-D

Today, I'd say it's Beach Music by Pat Conroy. However anything by Anne Rice, Pat Conroy, Dorothea Benton Frank. I love southern writers. I love supernatural books. I love all books really, but those are at the top of my list today.

Zombie, I love the Harry Potter books too. They're good in their own right, but I really like having something I can relate to my son about. We've got 2 copies of the new one reserved, one for me and one for him! :D We tried sharing the last one when it was released, that didn't work out too well.
I've never read the Hitchhikers Guide, but after talking to Microburn about it and hearing from you guys, I'll have to try it.

I read the uncut version of "A Stranger in a Strange Land." Basically, it was how Heinlein wanted it published (roughly 450 - 500 page, I think.) It was so-so. It seemed to drag on a lot and the issues and questions it raised were probably out of my league at the time. (I was like 14 or 15.) Now I'm 17 (turning 18 in a month), and having been a school that teaches critical thinking (and philosophy and whatnot) for the past eight months I'm anxious to try reading it again and see if most of what the book is about didn't just fly over my head the first time. I'll probably re-read it this summer or the next.

Dune, how could I forget that one.
I've read some of the sequals but I thought they were....well... crap. But Dune is a great book. Took me two or 3 reads to actually get most of it. Like reading a historical novel in the future absolute calssic.
I've read a couple of Dan Brown books, (DaVinci Code and Deception point) they are page turners but not books I'd read twice.
Decypher by Stel Pavlou might appeal to a lot of people here.
Sven Hassells war books - Tiny, Porta etc written from the point of view of a crew in a German Penal Tank battalion.
I'm rereading lotr at the moment.

I also really liked The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage by Clifford Stoll. I think MsM recommended that book to me.
Reall... all I have time to read are Text Books. They aren't quite as much fun. :(

Now: my fave books? Easy enough
Anything by Heinlein, most especially Friday, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and Starship Troopers (not the movie, the book - this is a book thread, get literate.)
I, too, adore the Harry Potter series, having all of them in hardback since day 1. I eagerly await the release of the next this coming summer (HP and the Half Blood Prince?).
I also liked the Wheel of Time series by Jordan, both the Xanth and Apprentice/Adept series by Piers Anthony, and the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. I'm quite partial to the Sleeping Beauty erotic fiction by Anne Rice written under her nom de plume A.N. Roquelaure, as well as her Vampire books.
Mrs |ce enjoys romance novels like Gone with the Wind and Scarlett, and any books by VC Andrews. She's also into John Grisham novels, a taste I share with her.

Quite a few of those above...read all of Dan Brown's..except deception point..the HP series is alright,so was Tolkien(LOTR did drag a trifle bit though I thought),no one with any Asimovs?the Foundation and Robot series remain favourites,as does Ayn Rand's 'The Fountainhead'.I read loads when I have the time,which isnt that much any longer,I even enjoy P.G Wodehouse,so what?:P
Also a lot of spy/thriller stuff...though Len Deighton and Ken Follet're overestimated in my opinion,Forsyth is not..Michael Crichton,brilliant..anyone read Prey in addition to Timeline?

can any of you guys recommend a book that you think it's great but it is not widely knows. something obscure, crazy, whatever. most of the stuff in this thread i read already.
I read like 8 of the Wheel of Time books before I said "wow, I'm really not enjoying this, I quit". :D I just didn't like them. I'm not into fantasy all that much. I did enjoy LoTR okay, and loved the movies (mostly because of all the beautiful boys in it though) although the movies bugged me cause they didn't follow the books, particularly at the end.
Just finished reading Shem Creek by Dorothea Benton Frank. If you don't like the south, and you don't want a woman's perspective on things, these books are not for you. However, I love them. They're funny, and a pretty apt description of what living in the south is really like. I see enough of my family, my friends and myself in the characters in them that they make me laugh. Looking for Pawley's Island, her next book. I used to vacation there when I was a child, so I'm looking forward to it.
Morgan, I went to a bookstore this weekend and looked for the other Marion Zimmer Bradley books but they didn't have any. I'm still looking though. ;)

I've not read Fight Club, nor have I seen the movie. It just didn't appeal to me in the least. However, I also didn't know it was a book. I'll check it out sometime and let you know what I think.
I can let you know what I think about the whole male identity crisis idea though. Yes, I think that overall, a lot of men in our society are experiencing an identity crisis. Women are able to work, to earn livings, to take care of themselves, and to have babies, all without the input of a man anymore. Women don't need to be protected, don't need to be supported, and other than the sperm they can get at fertility clinics, don't even need a man to get pregnant. What purpose is there for men anymore? I don't feel this way, I am a fairly traditional stay at home mom, my husband works to support my son and me, and I need him. He knows that, and he is secure in himself and his place in the world. Overall though, I think that men are at a precarious place in evolution in our society.

Let me tell you something sista grrl... we don't need you. You think we can't raise an egg in a bucket simulating a womb? Freeze a few quadrillion eggs? Put one in a cows womb or worse! Or split DNA into any sequence we desire. Force replication of desireable female traits... Ha ha hah ha.
Oh wait... Wait we need em for porn... oops that's gone into the cyber realm as well. No need for photo input. Just a mathematic equations to fill in 3d excellerated models. Guess we don't need women either, which puts the human race into an interesting identity crisis.

Good Lord RoadClosed! I said I didn't feel that way! I was simply stating facts for some men. Just as some women need a man to feel fulfilled, some men need a woman to feel fulfilled. Imagine how those same men, who think they need a woman to need them, feel to know that overall, most women don't need them anymore? I mean really...the reasons that you posted for men to need women are not really needs. They are more along the lines of wants. If reproduction was stopped, both sexes would suffer, not just men or women. However, in all reality, women have, since the beginning of time, required a man in order to survive in the world. That has changed in the last 100 years, and even you have to admit that.
Morgan, I'd love to read more of the Mists of Avalon books. I really loved that. I'm the same way, I love to read historical fiction from a womans perspective. You just don't get it that often, and it's fun. And a female pirate...woohoo!! :D I am so there!!
